Unknown stone and a interesting possibility
Ok so I bought a stone on a interesting hunch. It is a red and black stone from a seller who has sold most of the Glanrafon and Fiddich River stones that I have seen. This stone peaked my interests because of something Neil Miller said in an old 2012 post about the Fiddich River Stone. He said The stuff found in the bed of the Fiddich River is describes as being a laminated marble. Further up is found a black/red layered type of marble which perhaps is of the same sort as that found in the river bed. The red black stone seems to be very similar in type to the Fiddich River Stone I have only not as fine a finisher still like a very nice Coticule though.
Now for the fun part. In that same post from 2012 Neil speaks of stones being called marble that aren't actually marble, but seem similar. Well I decided to do a small test with both my Fiddich River Stone and this strange red and black stone to see if they were in fact marble in hopes of my answer. I took scrappings of both stones from the side and add 6 M HCL with no effect to either sample. If truly marble they should effervesce. So I don't believe either stone to be truly marble. In scrapping they do feel similar to it though. I don't think anyone did a full acid test on a Fiddich River Stone so I still feel confident that mine is a Fiddich River Stone and that this other stone maybe an upper layer from the same region and similar material.
