Default A couple dollar hones !

Kind of excited about the stones i've picked up this summer so far (and for a dollar a piece!). The one on the left is the one i'm most curious about. After i cleaned up the grime it appeared that even the flat side appeared to still have saw marks on it. It lapped rather easily and had a very dark slurry. I used a already hone razor to test it (12k and green escher finish). Made a fine cloudy scratch pattern with only a little (if any) noticeable difference in shave quality, maybe not as keen. I think i'll call it a Thuri (what do you think?)
The right hand stone (doing the same test) maybe falls in between a 5k and probably closer to a 8K.
What i'd really like to know is, was it common for people to cut and dress their own stones or were they all sold by someone? Did they ever sell ones that were rough like mine on one side or was it damaged somewhere along its life?

It's just a variety of ordinary slate there are full mountains of it around here.
All you will do without taking the time,

your probably right.(a thuringian is a slate) My testing of late hasn't been as promising as i had hoped. (of course i've had hones that i've sold because i didn't like them and the new owner thought they were great.) At least i'm not out too much money .
