Has anyone tried or use the Jende Nanocloth?

I’ve looked at these a few times over the last couple of years, and they’ve always peeked my interest, but it was always when I was on another mission.

Needless to say, I never bought any.

Looks like a reasonably inexpensive way of not only maintaining, but obtaining an over the top edge, if one so desires.

A 4K to 600k progression for about $700 is, IMO, pretty good bang for the buck.

Anyone tried them, any feedback?

Never tried the Nano cloth with nano paste. I am sure they work, but have tried tons of fabric substrates, they all work, even leather.

The problem with nano abrasives is contamination. At that level of abrasive, airborne dust is larger than the abrasive. How do you clean a pasted strop?

I use paper strops for nano abrasives and find that after about a year, they are contaminated to the point that, I make a new one. My favorites are Pellon and Polyester canvas. Both are inexpensive, $5-10 per yard from which you can make 20-30 strops, depending on size. A brown paper shopping bag makes a great paper strop, I can buy 2 in D rings from my local Ace hardware or Tandy.

I prefer a hanging pasted strop for razors and paddles for tools and knives. For tools and knives, contamination is not as big an issue and .50um is plenty keen.

Diamonds are aggressive, with pressure and/ or lots of laps very aggressive. Few razors can handle a diet of a 600k edge, few can handle a 30k edge, (chrome oxide).

5-10 laps of .50um, from an 8k edge can keep you shaving for a long time, depending on the razor.

I use a strop pasted with cubic boron nitride spray from Jende. Very happy with it, helps my edges last much longer.

Yea, Jende, Ken Schwartz makes good stuff, I have used his CBN and Diamond pastes and sprays for years. It is all top-notch stuff. I think I pretty much have his whole line of Diamond and CBN, .50um and up.

I have also recently tested lower priced Diamond powders and paste available on eBay for exceptionally low cost, especially in the lower grits that work very well. Diamonds have really come down in price and are much more available from various sources.

But for high grits .50um and higher, I would buy from Ken. For most folks, a bottle is a lifetime supply.

I think Ken’s market is really the EDC knife folks that are really after a mirror finish bevel and bragging rights about keen useless edges.

Start with some .50um CBN or Diamond and experiment. The worst that could happen is the edge micro chips and you go back to your finisher, joint the edge, and reset it and strop 5-10 laps and shave. .50 or .25 will keep you shaving a long lime.

1) I tend to agree, but why the obsession with so many people trying to take things up to the umpteenth level? Is it just bragging rights or does it polish the bevel, and make for a smoother experience?


2) Since I can’t get any feedback on the Jende Nanocloth strops. I bought a few to play with. The honeycomb structure on top of the acrylic block is what interest me. Once I finish using them, I’ll bag them up in a Ziploc or put them in Tupperware to try and keep the contaminants off for as long as possible.

After some research, I'm leaning towards using CNB. I’ve used Cr0x, and Fe20, but I don't have any real experience with CBN or Diamond. Unless it is one of the secret ingredients in one of the mystery compounds or pastes I’ve recently purchased.

From what I understand. CBN gives a smoother finish than diamond?

What are your thoughts on the two different products.

I guess the draw is the biggest difference that would make me use Jende compounds on them. Ken's were much lighter and with less feedback.
I agree, contamination is a buzz killer. Put them in individual plastic wraps (write what's what). I've ruined a few just because I forgot them on the table for a few days.

A few years ago, with the advent of knife honing jigs, some knife guys were shaving with knife edges.

They really were not really shaving daily, but just a swipe or two to show they could. Then it became all the rage. Thank you, YouTube.

Open a couple cardboard boxes or cut some cord and that edge is gone. The better Jigs can produce excellent, super even and very repeatable edges. Some enterprising souls are cutting down all manner of stones from Jnats to Coticules and all the high grit synthetic stone to fit the jigs, fueling the fire, (and making a small fortune).

Hey, I get it, it is all clean fun, if you have the money go for it. Then they discovered paste and omg, thermite on the fire. Ken even made a 0.015um Polycrystalline Diamond spray, (1,200,000 (1.2 Million grit!), sold for $350.00 a bottle.

Quality nano grit diamond and CBN produce similar edges. The problem is not the quality of the edge, (is one smoother than the other), but that the edge is so sharp, it will exfoliate any unevenness of the skin. You will not feel it, 30 seconds after shaving your skin will weep blood.

For me anything over .125um does that to me. I do have some guys with thick coarse beards and Kevlar skin that love that edge. These are the guys that shave twice a day.

Again, the issue is a blade that can handle the edges and to fully benefit, the edge must be a quality high grit edge at least 12k and near stria free.

A crazy sharp edge, with a similar BESS score (constantly under 10), can be achieved these days with a couple of good diamond matrix stones (to my surprise, not with CBN I had) and no stropping whatsoever.

For me it is not the umpteenth level. Stropping on linen and leather leaves me with uncomfortable edges after 5 shaves. Using 0,1 micron CBN spray from Jende on a leather paddle strop keeps my edges going for a much longer time. May sound crazy but it works for me. I use it before every shave but the first one after honing.
