Came with some miscellaneous shaving bits?
Hey guys,
I got this little block of stone with some miscellaneous shaving bits jet black before I cleaned it up in some dish soap.
What would of it been used for? it's got some purple and red grains in it.
For its size I just wondered if it was for sharpening de blades, but I have no real true.

I'm no expert on hones but it feels a bit soft and when I diamond plated one side I think that confirmed it's a softish kinda stone. The straight scratches you can see are from a fine DMT plate.

My guess too is a slurry stone. It seems a little small to be anything else unless it is a broken piece of a larger hone. Hard to really get the whole effect of a rock not in hand but you could always try running a razor across it and see what it does. If you have a loupe or other magnifier you could look at the striations and compare to what other stone you know produce. Even if it is a broken hone you might find it useful as a slurry stone. For my BBW/Coti natural combo I use another perfectly good coti as a slurry stone.

I would be tempted to run the edge of a razor that needed honing over the stone and examine the results with some magnification just to see what kind of striations the stone would cause.
When you used the DMT, did it raise some slurry?David

Its either a cleaning stone or a slurry stone.

It looks as if a part of an old hone. likely used on knives, axes, sickles and scythes.
Nothing to get near a razor with, for certain. Really looks un-natural. India Or a cross-section of a brick.

DE Hones have a dish in them.
