Thread: Escher Colors

I'm working on a small study to compare the honing qualities of the various types and colors of Escher hones.

I took some photos comparing the color of the Escher's I have here. They are arranged from most blue on the left to the most yellow on the right. Also included is a photo of the most blue next to the most yellow.

I haven't done any color correction yet. They were taken under 3200K photo lamps. The stone surfaces are wet to better show the color. #7 is a labeled blue-green.

Many thanks to Rich, Howard and Lynn for their help. I think saying that I have HAD is the understatement of the century!

Many thanks for this Tim. You may recall my sending an email back in mid October to you asking your assessment of the differences in the honing qualities based on color ? Rich Dominguez told me that if anyone would know it would be you. I asked Lynn and he said the differences are subtle.

I have always suspected that they marketed the stones with color labels to designate the best use for the stone based on color but with no catalogs or company literature it is hard to say. I just can't believe they went to the time and trouble to label the stones by color without a reason. We look forward to your assessment of the honing qualities of the individual colors.

Tim, what an array of gorgeous Escher hones! I will follow this thread religiously to learn what you observe relative to the finishing quality of each of these hones. My most burning question is whether or not you find a strong correlation between stone color and finishing quality. You have a rather complete spectrum and so are in a good position to determine this. BTW, there is a "light green" color designation. Do you think that any of the stones on the extreme right fit this color designation?

I don't know how you make such a nice picture's .i tried my best and i hope you guys could see color differences.there is i put best of my abiltiy and understanding Escher's.I have used 100x magnification to see the edge after using every escher .this is the results i have.Good luck to you and hope 1 day we will find out true escher performance colors.rest picture's i did took closer and hope that will give more idea's about color's

Sam, I know that you have found the brown to be the best. I know of another Escher collector (not on the forum) who thinks the same thing. I have yet to get my hands on one. I don't know if Escher ever made one with a label stating "brown" ?

Jimmy it says very fine hone Stamp and use only for a good razor's.I am looking for help myself that is why i am hoping that picture will help to figure it out.All in early Post my personal experience that doesn't mean i can't be wrong.

Not saying your wrong Sam. There is a guy in North Florida that collects Eschers. For awhile he was buying all of the big ones that came up on ebay. He told me that the brown Escher is the best of his bunch and he has all of the colors many times over.

Those collections are amazing! That's an incredible array you two have there!

Jeez. I didn't even know there was a brown. Now I gotta find one...

I have a 5" taupe stone (lower) that I've been curious about. It turns quite brown when moistened, developes a slurry and appears to be quite fine. None of my stones are marked but based on their characteristics I assume the rest are Thuringian. If no one minds me asking, can this be safely assumed?
