This is picture of the Turkey oil stone. i can't say a lot so far about it. i am in the process of testing it. so far
1 Drinks oil as Camel in the Desert.
2. Fastest cutting stone i have used.(among finishing hones)
3.Brakes down very easily shatters .
i have a lot to test on this stone i could change my mind later.

Is this the same Turkey oil stone that was at Mid-Mo? If so it is the one hone I had intended to handle but neglected to.
This is not the same one but similar one. they are differ on colors. this one is a little darker. MO meeting one was white .

I am a hone collector and user and have been following these forums with interest. I wanted to contribute my 25cents worth, so I became a member. I hope my posts are of use to others.
I came across a garage sale a while back, a old fella was selling his prized tool kit he collected over a life time. I seen this curious slipstone and asked the old fella about it. He said it's an old "Turkey" he has had for a long time. I've read about these stones but have never seen one, so I bought it for it's price of $2. Here are some pics.Stone is coated with WD40.
When I was going thru some unidentified sharpening stones/hones I found a similar stone to the one above. I think it was a 8"(20cm) stone which broke to 5"(12.5cm) The last two have a coat of WD40. (The pinkish colour on the bottom of the stone (4th pic) is the reflection of my hands).

wow that is great to have more picture of that stone. i would love to see how it acts. i just got my 2 more turkey oil stones and will post pictures. they are changing colors when you oil them.

Sham, I am going to hire a private investigator to follow you around and take notes on your razor and hone acquisition habits... You come up with the most unusual things.
Welcome to SRP and thanks for the photos. The fabled Turkey is a rare one AFAIK. The only member I know of who has been lucky enough to find any is hi_bud. Let us know if yours lives up to it's reputation.

Turkey stones are varies a lot on quality this is just guess. i know colors does.
Sham, how are the turkey oil stones you have working out for honing razors? Are they finishers? If so, how do they compare to your better finishers like your brown escher, nakayamas, etc.
i am in early stage to test them. So far i would say i wouldn't put them in same level with Nakayama or escher.
they will cut faster a lot faster and drink darn oil alot.
Hoy...im going to have to start working overtime to get more money for stones.

These stones give fine edges then I use a charged leather strop to finish.
The surface mottling of that stone is quite distinctive. I'm going to look through my collection as it looks familiar. I was reading a book recently that said they used oil on the hones as it made them harder.

We have Turkey for Christmas dinner in the UK. We used to eat goose, but adopted the Turkey in recent history.
I'm pretty sure the stones were got from Turkey.
There does seem to be some slight confusion as to where these hones originate. Some sources give the origins of the stone as Central Turkey, whereas others claim that they originate from Crete, which was a part of the Ottoman Empire; so in either case Turkey Stone is accurate.

Now I had the chance to try this hone, thanks to Sham,
I am really surprised.
It starts with the noise! Its way louder than a coticule.
You could fear for your blade, but it does not eat it.
What it does, is making a hazy finish, but only very shallow scratches.
Just finished a blade with big surfaces on an 8000 grit Henckels (Naniwa)
to mirror finish, then went back to the TOS with oil.
It went into the polished steel after only a couple of strokes.
Hazy picture again. Edge still straight at 100 x magnification.
Polished again on the 8000 really easy.
Lapped the TOS once more and removed the oil.
Tried with water and got a finer haze.
Stropped the blade and the strop polished the very edge just fine.
The rest of the bevel brightened up while stropping, but not completely.
Polished the rest out on the 8000 grit Henckels really easy.
Not sure how I like it better, with water or oil.
The hone is funny. Never seen such a weird surface from others.
I'd say its a keeper! :)

Picture which you are seeing is a Turkey oil stone.
when you use it stone will get more darker.

The stone itself is a blue/gray colour, like
many slate stones. However the texture is a little
coarser than fine slates, and certainly coarser
than a Charnley Forrest. The cutting rate
is higher too.
I worked a blade (and old chisel) using white spirit before the photo
to attempt to have the colour as natural as possible
I also used SiC paper to reveal "unused" stone (the lighter, bluer
area near the top in the photo).
The stone is lightly used, and unusually worn; the surface
is convex in width, and also has two humps in length.
Not the "overall concavity" normally seen on stones
used for woodworking.

The next to be considered is the TURKEY OIL STONE, which was in more general use before the introduction of the Washita. This stone is of a grayish color, and of very smooth, even grit. It cuts somewhat faster than the Washita, and also leaves a better edge. The main trouble with Turkey oil stones is that they are rarely free from cracks and fissures, and are easily broken. If it were not for this fact, the Turkey stone would be much more popular.

I never tried a Turkey stone, though I read about them. I cannot recall where, but in another old tome the Turkey was said to be highly regarded by carpenters, wood workers of the nineteenth century and beyond. Those members who got hold of some of the current stuff said that they were inconsistent in quality and easily broken, so I decided to take their word for it and be satisfied with what I had. Yours is a beautiful example of a vintage stone. Thanks for sharing it.Quote:

I do have few of OTs of different sizes in my collection and I use them on my sharp tools. at present I have two smaller ones on my table as we speak (used with oil). Some of them are also cracked as described however what I have noticed that if the stone is cracked but those pieces are not misplaced then there is no noticeable effect for honing. The only problem is when it is misplaced.
I like them as they are quite quick and I can use them with gauges and not too much worry about pressure while honing.
One of the better informed people here is Vasilis.
Thomas Hazeon was a London Merchant, selling others peoples goods, like arkansas, whittle hill, grecian oilstones, turkey stones - this was around 1893-5 though, when they used 'CutPhast' as a trademark.Quote:

Some saws were simply marked "Hazeon, London" but originally the company was very much like AB Salmon (ie in the late 1800s) and specialised in the same things such as honestones, grindstones, carpenters tool baskets, scythe stones, etc. The stuff they retailed will tell you nothing about its origins, though. T H & Co made grinding wheels for wet grinding, as well as the troughs the wheels were set into and on which the grinders sat.
FYI there was a lot of confusion about Turkey Stones - not only were there several different types, but some did not cut as finely as others. All work better with a light oil. Some of the confusion was 'spin' in which stones of similar cutting characteristics were called Turkey Stones by dishonest sellers, but of course they are easily spottable.
