cheeeep shapton glass stones and a NEW glass stone

Hey guys/gals, Chefsknivestogo.com has just recently picked up shapton glass stones, and is offering 25% off plus free shipping on orders over 60 bucks right now. Also to note is the 8000 "extreme polish" stone. It's a slower polishing 8000 grit stone that gives a brighter finish with less scratch lines. If you go higher than 8000 (who doesn't?) this won't matter, but it's cool to see new products nonetheless.

That is a really reasonable price, thanks for the heads-up. So what's up with that 8000 "extreme polish" stone??? That's the first I've ever heard of that one, sounds made up :p

How could that even be possible for the DRLP to be $209? I think that one normally goes for $489 and a trade in if you already have a DRLP and need a new one is like $325.

For those who don't yet have a GDLP, I'd buy a DRLP in a second over the GDLP. IIRC the DRLP is for heavy duty use.

The more I think about it, I wonder if the site is referring to the GDLP rather than the DRLP. The reg price they list at around $280 is what the GDLP goes for.

I'm pretty sure that it is the DGLP. Even though they pictured and described the DRLP. If that were the correct sale price for the DRLP, I would buy a case of them.....:hmmm:

I was thinking the same thing, that it is the same price as the DGLP. Whichever it is, if you are only sharpening razors the glass plate is just as good isn't it ? I think the more expensive DRLP would only be worthwhile if you sharpened chisels as well ?

The R side of the DRLP or reference side, can be used as a 600 grit diamond stone. Since it is so flat, it can be used as a good bevel setter. It is meant to be used in conjunction with the Shapton 1K to check progress.

For SR's the price may be a bit overkill, but it as also a lapping plate, so you kill two birds with one heavy plate. Also, as you mentioned in another thread, the flatness of the Shaptons in unbeatable.

The description and the photo is talking exclusively about the DRLP though. I'm at work now and can't call the place, otherwise I'd be on the horn confirming it as we speak. Can someone else call them today and confirm whether it's the DGLP or the DRLP?

I agree, if for some totally wacky reason it IS the DRLP, I would think someone could buy them and sell them on Ebay immediately for a profit. That's why there's got to be a mix up there.

600 grit diamond hone (reference plate side) which is flatter than flat AND a stone lapping plate in the save heavy bronze unit? Sign my up that that price!!

I couldn't resist, I had to call this company. They're having a product specialist confirm whether it's the DRLP or the DGLP. The item number is SHGL15. Shapton Glass 15? I agree even if it is the DGLP it's a great price. I've owned the DGLP though and personally am interested in the DRLP and not the DGLP. I do hone chisels from time to time as well, so to me the DRLP would be perfect.

Do Shaptons generally nep a lapping BEFORE first use? If so, I'll need that DG(or R)LP as well, I guess.

Just bought a combo belgian today, might as well make it a hone spending day.

Shaptons should be lapped before each and every time they are used. The nature of the polymer binder. A DMTC works fine if you don't want to go for the more expensive Shapton plate. Sandpaper will do it as well. They are selling the glass stones from 500 through 8k but not the 16.

IT'S NOT THE DRLP IT'S THE GDLP. CONFIRMED

Yes the do need lapping prior to first use and NO YOU DO NOT NEED THE GDLP. YOU CAN USE DMT or other diamond lapping plates.

I received a call back from the product manager at this company. He held one of the Shapton lapping plates in his hands and confirmed they're selling the GDLP and NOT the DRLP for the $209 (which is still a killer deal). He said he already changed the website to correct the error. BUMMER!!!! I knew it was too good to be true.

Incidentally, he said he's getting the Shapton 16k in a few weeks to sell and he's planning on having very low introductory prices on the 16k. 16k seekers.........watch this site and report to each other when that 16k is for sale. You should get a great deal here it seems.

I sent an email to them as well.

The SHGL15 is listed as the GlassStone JP 8000/1.84 @ $88 on Shapton's site.

If I were in the market for shaptons now, I'd probably head to the Vendors corner and check out Tom Blodgett's (jendeindustries) post there.... he apparently has the 16k's and 30k's 25% off too, so that's where i'd go to get my bread buttered.... oh yeah,,, free shipping as well.
