Question about some barber hones...

I just recieved these in the mail today.

Hone #1: Carborundum 118S


Looking around the forums, i found a post stating this came in around a 4k? It does feel very coarse, even after lapping.

Does this sound about right?

Hone #2: Frictionite 00


This one is double sided and also had a smaller stone in the box. Does this stone serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things?
Around where does this stone come in at?

The 118S is much softer than some other Carborundums and is more coarse as well. I'm not sure that I'd put it as low as 4k though, only because I have shaved off of the 118S. I'll try to remember to look at the scratch pattern under a scope sometime soon. If I forget, PM me and that will push me to do it.

I presume that you are thinking the extra stone is a rubbing stone? I've never seen one with a Frictionite so I really have no idea about your extra stone. The Punjab hone is the only barber hone that I know of that came with a rubbing stone. It's also a double sided hone and its instructions say that it comes with a rubbing stone.

I suppose if I had to guess at grits for the frictionite, I'd say maybe 6k and 10k. That's a lame guess though because I haven't used any of mine for more than a year and though I know I looked under the scope at their scratch pattern, I was doing it with a lot of them at that time and may not be remembering this one correctly.

And yes Kelly, I need to catalog my barber hones!

As I sit at my desk drumming my fingers wondering when........;)

i tried using the Frictionite after the dmt just screwing around. I actually seemed to dull the razor.

The carbonite, i did 6 laps and was popping hairs on my leg. actually passed hht on a few spots.

If i really wanted to, i could shave off it. It might actually work w/ some pastes too... Dunno.

I am sure i am just doing this wrong.

I bought the set thinkin gi would keep one for travel, now i'm thinking i will probably be better off with a pasted strop for travel....

Oh well.... It was nice to play around with.

The first hone I ever had was my grandfathers Little Frictionite 00!:) It came with directions, a green cloth case and the rubbing stone!

According to the printed directions the rubbing stone is used to remove any swarf that has built up on the hone surface, and it works very well for that job. It also functions to "refresh" the hone surface.

IMHO the coarse side is for light touch ups and the fine side is a finishing side. In the past they have sold on Ebay for over $100. ( I have 2 of them!:)).

O.k.... I may need to hold on to this frictionite for awhile and give it a chance. Did not realize it was such a cool little stone.

How many strokes would you do on these frictionite hones? just 4-6 per side?

The rubbing stone looked to be a carborundum type.
In all honestly using a rubbing/slurry stone made from another barber hone works just fine. Just cut them long enough to fit across the width of the hone. The next one I make I will cut the sacrifical barber hone lengthwise. The tool to use is a slow speed metal cutting bandsaw. Worked just fine in the past.:)

That's what I would try at first. Just remember this is a hone to be used when a shaving sharp razor starts to pull a little, a touch up hone. It is not meant to replace a 4000/6000 grit stone. The coarse side might be equal to an 8000 but it cuts very slow so only use it when the fine side of the hone is not developing the edge the way you want it.

Just my humble opinion backed by actual usage of that hone a number of years ago.:)

This is Gold information. don't use it after 1200 dmt it is just useless in that situation.
Use it after norton 8k then you will see it does work. gl
