Just curious gentleman. What is a decent condition charnley forest stone worth. From what i have read they are very good finishing hones. I am currently keeping my eye on one and was just wondering what approximately they usualy go for. Thanks in advance gents.

One thing I know is the more a razor or hone is talked up on the forum the more it will tend to bring at auction. There is a particular brand of Solingen razor that I covet. I have a seven day set of them that has never been used and three individual copies that I shave with. I think I was watching the stone you mention, wasnt going to bid just watched and it went for just a few quid. Am I right :) Nice rock for that price. OLD VINTAGE WOODEN CASED SHARPENING STONE on eBay (end time 21-Jul-09 18:29:22 BST) is it the one?

Looks like it might be a CF with the red streaks.
Yes it showed all marks of CF. However it was stangelu shaped. The tops side was shorter than stone itself. I was thinking to buy it and cut it for slurry stones for my hone and others which i will be selling soon.
As for original question. My stones range from £25 to £160. Realy type and size matters.
BTW there are 2 more on the auction site at present.
The one PuFFah mentions ended before the initial post was made. My supposition was Importcarguy meant this one. Had it on my list as well, hoping it might go unnoticed like the other one seemed to have gone.
I agree with Adrspach that prices vary a lot. CFs can be had for a few tenners, but advertised as CF among SR fans they sometimes fetch 200 USD as easily :shrug:

Same as you love us with Sheffield originated big blades which are imposible to get over here.
I was thinking of cutting an inch off of the end of mine and using it as a slurry stone. So far I've resisted the temptation and I just use a credit card sized DMT 325 to make slurry. I'll probably leave mine as is since the DMT is satisfactory. If someone cut one up for slurry stones I would certainly buy one.Quote:

Additionally, ive been considering cutting the spare Charnley to a 0.5 inch thickness and glueing it to an Arkansas Surgical Black or Translucent as a double sided stone...that way i would get two out of the one. They do work quite well as a progression.

I would think that a 'standard slurry stone would be maybe 1" x the width and thickness of the stone it is taken from ? I draw that conclusion from factory slurry stones that came with both a vintage Escher and a Tam 'O Shanter. I have tried a slurry on my Cf's and I found it produces a less effective edge compared to bare hone with water or as one of mine is, with oil.

I cant speak for the others, but if i use a slurry on my Charnley, it basically removes the need to use my 8k(translucent), in the progression...this is why im pretty much decided on backing my Charnley, that im cutting, with a black surgical Arkansas this weekend.Quote:

Reason why I want slurry stone is to find out how it will change characteristics of the hone. As you have already tried can you enlighten us how did you make your slurry? Was it oil or water? Did you use CF slurry stone or anything else?

Well I have used a small (credit card size) DMT 325 to raise a slurry on my CF. Seemed to be effective. The same procedure as with the coti, diluting until down to clear water and then going with that.
I haven't the heart to put oil on the stone even though I know it is recommended and has undoubtedly been used on my CF somewhere along the way. I thought about cutting an inch of the stone to have a slurry stone of the same grit but I don't have the heart to do that either. So buying one from another stone is a good option for me.
I haven't used the stone that much and have yet to get to know it. Maybe I will find that the slurry stone is not the best way to go with it but I like to experiment. Someday I may even overcome the aversion to oil. :)
Here is my Charnley Forest which I have been using as a finisher for around the past 9 months. I purchased the stone believing it was a light green escher and was quite dissapointed when it arrived, but after lapping it and using it on a few blades, I was ecstatic. At first I used it with a light slurry and couldn't believe how great the edges were after this stone compared to my vintage coticules and eschers. Then I tried with water only and finally I have been using it with honing oil and the results have been even better.

The best edge i have got from charnley is with oil without slurry. Specially i like to use charnley exclusively stainless steel blades. charnley is the best for it.My experience.

I dont think ive tried the Charnleys, yet, with a slurry, but what if one used a slurry for a certain number of laps, then ran a number of laps on the charnley w/out slurry?
What do you guys think?

I tried that and it seemed to work just fine for me. As Sham noted the slurry is faster cutting and then refine the edge diluting the slurry and finally getting to plain water. I'm in no hurry.Quote:

I think, considering that i go from a 6-8k translucent to the charnley, it probably would be a good idea to transition, with a slurry....i will try a couple blades this weekend.
