DMT 1200 condition
I got a new DMT 1200, a couple of questions-
There is some print on the side, I presume if you read it the 'UP' side is the top/working surface?
The 'up' side does not seem uniform in color or texture (& the 'bottom' side has a pretty good gash in it). Is this 'up side' normal??
thanks
Joe

If it's a single grit dia-sharp, then you are right in that the working side is the side that faces up when the text on the side reads from left to right as normal.
Like so:

I don't know about the gash. It shouldn't bother the plate as long as it isn't bent. If the plate is new I would think it would be clean and the surface could be shiny or maybe matte. I've had mine so long I can't remember. You can clean it with a bristle brush and Comet BTW. Take your fingernail and rub the edge of your nail on the surface and you'll know which is the diamond side.

What they said. They gash doesn't sound so good though. Do some checks with a straight edge & ensure it's true on the business side.
On a different note, never be tempted to lap with it, or raise slurries. Mine's damn near useless now, as i knew no better!

I had a similar issue with my DMT1200 when I received it, but not the gash, my concern was the honing surface and the bubbles that were everywhere. I called the factory and was directed to the dealer I purchased it from. The dealer offered to take a look at it and replace it if they found it to be defective. I decided 'screw it' and gave it a go with an old blade. It performed exactly as I expected it to, when I ordered it, and I just kept it. In your case though I would just call the dealer and ask them what they might do to midigate the issues you have, and go from there.
Good Luck!
