Anybody use the shapton stone holder?

That is what Harrelson and Howard used. I am stuck at the kitchen sink with a towel under the hone. Not a bad thing but I can see where the pond and holder would free me up to move to where the TV is. That might be a bad thing for my concentration. :)

Was honing this morning and decided to be lazy. I just set the 16k on top of the last stone I used and... it worked pretty good.

I bought the same thing from Rasurpur, El cheapo, and works like a charm.

Yeah, I bought one of those for each of my diamond plates and they are handy for holding the plates and serving as a stable platform.

Around here you can get western red cedar in 2x3. they are for the rails that fence boards are attached to.

A good size for 3 inch stones, being narrower the stone overhangs the sides a little so you don't need to fully inset or cut channels for drainage. just notch and wedge the stone in place. shave off the top as the stones thins

If you like the kitchen sink you can make the base long enough to bridge across.

I can't FATHOM spending 180 bucks on something that does no more than hold the stones (and swarf and water)..... I bought a cafeteria tray that's 14x18 with a .75 inch high lip around the sides. That's 3.1 liters of swarf and water it can hold. It cost me one lousy dollar. It's friggin awesome.

Watching Harrelson put his shoulder into lapping the hones as he goes through the progression you can really see what Shapton means by a "system".

So the whole ball of wax is expensive and not something I personally would invest in but I can see why they made it.

I lay a large piece of rubber shelf liner down.
Place cafeteria tray on top.
Put down a piece of shelf liner, top with a treated 2x4, finish with another layer of shelf liner.

I put my DMT's or shaptons or whatever hones right ontop of the shelf liner topped 2x4. It holds things great, and I've never had an issue. I think the shelf liner cost me a dollar, too. Things don't budge a bit. I use this for straight razors and knives ranging from small pocket knives to big meat cleavers. I thought about doing my riding lawnmower blades on it but that's excessive... :)

I can put my shoulder into it when I'm lapping with my DMT C or XXC just fine.

I guess I look at the shapton accessories the same way lots of people look at Apple (mac) products. Shiny, nice, obviously do a great job, but also expensive. For what they do, I think the apple products are a good deal when compared to the shapton accessories.

I lap my stones under running water at the sink,
because I don't have a dedicated workspace and
I'm not a fan of mess. I also use the Shapton
holder while honing, because it keeps the stones
flat and well-secured.

Welcome to SRP. Between the SRP Wiki here and the forum archive you will find everything you need to know regarding straight razors and if you can't find it just ask on the forum and someone will point you in the right direction. :tu

It looks like a nice holder, but I generally prefer to hold my hones in my hand. If I were honing a lot of razors, I'd probably feel differently.
