Case for Shapton set?

Hey all,

So soon I will have a lot of new Shapton glass stones: 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000, 8000, 16000, 30000, DGLP and the stone holder. I'm fully aware than some of them, i.e. the 3000 and the 6000, aren't necessary but I'm getting them fully for the sake of completeness and because I'm OCD like that. :p The only one of the set that I will not have is the 220, but since the DGLP is only recommended to lap 500-30000, I don't really want a stone in the set that I can't lap with the DGLP, and 500 should be coarse enough for anything.

So for those who have the set of Shaptons, how do you store them? I know SRD has a really nice 8-stone wooden holder and I'm considering that for display purposes (but I will have 9 stones!). But what I'm really looking for is some sort of case that I can put everything into and be closed, especially if I wished to transport/travel with them.

I remember seeing icedog's thread: Protecting the Shapton Investment - Straight Razor Place Forums and was very impressed with that. I was wondering if anyone else had something similar or their own way of storing or transporting their Shaptons.

One idea that crossed my mind is to get a briefcase and line it with some sort of dense foam. Then cut out the appropriate shapes of the stones, the DGLP, and the holder so each could have its own compartment, and the briefcase could be nicely closed so everything would be secure and would not rattle around. I would need to cut the foam before I secured it into the briefcase, but I don't know if they would all fit as I haven't really considered the measurements yet. I really don't know if that idea is feasible, but it was just something that crossed my mind....

Let me know what you think and feel free to share any thoughts and ideas on the matter. :tu

I remembered seeing Brad's excellent holder. I wonder if he might be into making one for you custom if you're into that ? Looked mighty nice. BTW, I don't care what they say that GDLP can lap mine isn't going near anything below 1K. I'd rather be safe than sorry. :) Enjoy those glass stones. Your ready for anything now.

I agree on both Brad's Shapton holder being awesome and also that I view the GDLP as 1k and above. But as you know, based on my experiences with the GDLP (was that "My GDLP has issues" post pre-crash?), I view the GDLP as a DELICATE precision instrument rather than a "go ahead, beat it up" workhorse hog like the DMT D8C and below.

The DGLP and the Stone Holder fit together, the
lapping plate on top of the holder. I keep my
stones stacked next to the holder and DGLP on
the shelf. I only have 6 hones, though...

I use a Pelican case that was originally intended for a satellite phone. it holds my Shapton 220, 500, 1000,2000,6000,8000,16000, as well as DMT 8 inch stones, XXC, C, F, EF.

It's just like the one in the link, but they make bigger and smaller. It's friggin awesome. I keep my stones in the boxes they come in, then put them inside the pelican case. You could drop 'em off the back of a truck and they'd be just fine.

They're waterproof, crushproof, dustproof, and they have a little valve so that they can adjust the air pressure.

To be honest I like the Pelican cases that Ben had a link to. They provide a nice place to store all of them, but also makes them very easily transportable...I will look further into it.

No problem, Dave. Just wait for your stones to come in, Put them all together and measure what dimensions you would need for the interior. Remember to account for the thickness of the foam that you want as well as anything else you might want to store in there.

I'd call Pelican and see if they have anything that doesn't have the "pick and pluck" foam, too, since it might come out over time. Or, just take out whatever foam is in the container and glue in your own foam.

I was thinking of adding my own foam that I cut out little spaces for each of the stones/items to fit snuggly inside. I'm not thinking about it too seriously right now since the purchase of these stones REALLY sucked my bank account dry. I will start planning it out more when I have a little more dispensable money.... But those Pelican cases would really look sexy with a set of hones in them. :D

I've got one of those cases that I used for carrying a tattooing setup to tattoo conventions when I used to go to them to work. They are formidable cases and would definitely protect your hones from damage.
