Most razor hones are uniform or dual grit. In the latter case it has 2 distinct layers.
Thank you Kees, the reason i ask is there is a nick on the "top"(the side that has the name"Crown Razor Hone")edge that i beveled decently but while lapping the underside (for cosmetic reasons) it appeared chip free throughout. From what i can tell its old and seems to be of solid color or "uniform". Thank you again :)
I have one that belonged to my Grandfather...
My Grandfather used the back (non logo side). Before lapping it had a strong 1/8" dip.
After lapping both sides with DMT's (course through extra fine), I found no difference between sides. It was very easy to lap.
I haven't used it enough to comment on performance and need to revisit it.
Thank You Deryan for reminding me!
your welcome,i was out with my wife today and stopped by the local antique store and the owner said "i haven't ran into any new barber stuff for yah but i do have this hone here i'll let you have for 5 bucks" so now i have another barbers hone in pretty good condition :)
use the side which has name on it.
Some of them made exact color but different grit on each site( i am not saying yours is but could be) . Always branded side is finer.GL
Any idea as to how fine it is? Does it compare to an 8K or 12K?
