Another Stone I.D. needed.

Alright all you hone guys, tell me what we have here. The stone is around 2"X2"x12", seems to be fairly soft, deep purple to near black in color, and throws a purple slurry. First thought for me is BBW but I have never seen one in this size and shape. It looks like it was in a box at one point in its life. I have cleaned and lapped one side to see how it turned out. The thing is so purple I might call it Barney if it turns out to be a good stone.........

Well the slurry is absolute dead on in color of a Belgian Blue stone. The stone surface has similarities to a BBW, but based on the pictures of the stone surface alone I would have a hard time giving an absolute positive ID.

All you can do is put a razor to it and see how it works for you. The slurry looks like BBW as Chris noted and to me the color of the stone looks like the Thuringan family.

This stone seems to have the similar red specks of these pics and the trademarks of the BBW but the size just seems a little odd to me(a solid 2"x2"x12"). You get some light sparkles under good light, and the lapped side is definitly very smooth. We are going to take a blade to the 1000 grit Norton and see what "Barney" here does to the scratches left by that. Keep the opinions coming though.

Here are some pics of BBW slurry.

The surface color of your stone is throwing both Jimmy and me because I agree, it looks gray rather than purple. Every BBW I have when viewed in person has an obvious purple hue to it. Not gray at all.

Also, the sparkle when viewed closely on a BBW in my experiences with my stone have a red/pink/purple glint to each speck from the individual garnets in the stone. You can see that in the first set of pictures I've posted for you.

That could very well be a "salmon rouge". Due to some misunderstanding lots of people think they are a pink type of Coticule, but "salmon rouge" was actually a BBW from a layer with fast capabilities, sold by some Coticule companies that had access to that layer, long time ago. The slurry has a color known in French as "lie de vin". check that color out here: pourpre.com - Fiche couleur: lie de vin

I have never seen a Salmon Rouge in person, so don't take this for a positive ID. But it's a possibility.

And the stone is only very slightly purple, my pics do not show the color very well. Under a close view, the specks do seem to be red. The pics you guys are showing of the BBWs however are for sure more purple than this stone but the slurry seems to be the same.....:thinking:. You've got me on this one, lets hope it was worth $30.

Not much. Allegedly, the Salmon Rouge was the commercial name used by one of the former Coticule manufacturers to sell a particular type of fast BBW. From what little I have heard about them, they were the only BBW's that were separately sold as stones for honing. Other BBW's were only used as backing stone, glued to Coticules. They were not meant to be used for honing.
That's why I assumed that, if yours is a BBW, it could very well be one of the old Salmon Rouge hones. Without a box or a label, I can never know for sure. I have only read and heard about the BBW called "Salmon rouge". Never actually seen one.

I'm thinking the same as the slurry is keeping me from thinking that it might be an Escher or anything else.........but I really don't know, thats what I have you guys for.

I once received a wrist watch as a gift. I was a structural iron worker on high steel in those days and foolishly wore the watch to work ( it was a dress watch) and broke the crystal out of it.

I went to a watch repairman and asked him if it was a "good watch". He said, "Does it keep good time ? If it keeps good time it's a good watch."

The moral of the story is that whatever you call the stone if it is a good cutter it is a good hone. :D

The slurry looks like that from a BBW but the stone itself may have had oil on it in the past giving it that almost black Thuringer look to it. I have a salmon rouge and it doesn't look like that - more like a reddish BBW - difficult to tell stand alone but next to a BBW the difference is evident.

Funny, I never heard of Salmon Rouge before Bart's post and now I need one badly. :rofl2: A picture is worth a thousand words ... or so I've heard Howard. :)

Size and Shape of Belgians

The shape isn't much of a clue when IDing stones. I have a few very narrow coticules and blues that I've cut over the years for special purposes.

Looks like a BBW to me. Same speckles and everything. You can contact Rob at Ardennes, It'll take him a while to get back to you, but he can probably ID it for you...

I am standing here looking at this hone (in person) and it's the same color all the way through. It does through a nice dark purple slurry. I am going to put a razor on it tonight I do believe and see what it does. I figured since the general conclusion is BBW I am going to go to it after the 1k and see what happens. First with then without a slurry. I will let you all know what I find.

I told phill to message the guys at Ardennes and see what they say.

The only thing that has me wondering is the fact that the BBW was not sold as a hone in the early day's just as a backing for the coticule and to find a chunk off BBW this big in a antique store just seems kinda odd (but what do I know):shrug:

Red dots in the stone...purple slurry...I would bet anything it's a BBW.

If you want to know anything for sure, I'd say PM Bart and send it over to him to play with. He would be your best bet on finding something out, aside from the Rob at Ardennes.

I did get to use the hone today. I ran several passes on it coming off a norton 4/8 k pyramid. It appeared to make the scratches smaller (or polish the edge a little more) It is still hard for me to tell as I only have a 10X loupe. I did my normal cromox leather strop passes after coming off this stone and I shaved rather well. So now I am really confused. If it were a bbw would it not dull the edge a little coming off the 4/8? I guess I just need a better loupe and little more time!

Also, and I know this sounds weird, but wet the hone, if necessary work up a little slurry, and smell it.

Does it have an "earthy" smell? Almost like dirt?

Ok I should have been more clear when I said I shaved with the razor off this stone I just did a spot on my cheek and it seemed ok. I WAS VERY WRONG!!! Made full pass with it and it is not shave ready, don't get me wrong it shaved hair but that stone is no finisher!!! I am leaning more towards the BBW now.
