Oohira stone finish
Well I was recovering from a mild heat stroke (again) so I stayed inside and played with knives :p
I figured I was going to flatten a few stones anyway (Oohira) so I wanted to see if I could get the same mist on my yanagi as with another stone. Now I know this is not fully a "razor" post (yet) but it has to do with the hones used and round about look at the steel :p
This knife was given to me to practice my single bevel work years ago and I've decided to start the repairs to make it useable. Pic 1 is the King 1200 finish and the second pic is the Oohira finish.
So how does this tie into razors, let me continue :)
As you can see the grey "mist" on the iron cladding is not on the blue steel (edge). I have always loved this effect but never saw it on any razor, due to the iron vs steel I bet. The other interesting thing was the bloom on the stone. Jet black with in a few strokes with the yanagi, but I get none of that with razors... wild.
This is getting me more interested in Japanese naturals for my tradidtional japanese knives as well as razors... I'm also itching to get a Japanese straight as well :aargh:
Just thought I'd share :p

Nice polish! That edge looks toasty sharp! Does the Oohira finish go all the way to the edge, or is there another, smaller bevel?

I just did a fast 8k polish at the edge just incase I needed to us it before I work on it some more. This knife has seen some MAJOR abuse over the years. It's going to take me a while to remove all the damage :p
