Looking at buying my first norton 4k/8k water stone and need a little advice concerning a flattening stone. I have seen a tutorial using a D8C but just ran across the noton flattening stone while browsing. The differance in price is so small as to not be a factor. Would appreciate feedback on these stones before buying. Thanks.
Eventually the Norton flattening stone will need to be lapped, the DMT does not. That's why I went with the DMT. My 2 cents. :)
+1 on what Keenedge has to say here. I have noticed in several old threads about the Norton flattening stone needing re-flattened. So what is the point in getting one then? IMHO I would get the DWT.

Wow that was fast! Thanks for the input. Looks like it's gonna be the DMT.
I use a granite floor tile and some wet/dry sand paper. It works pretty good, but you end up eating through sandpaper pretty quick.
I'd suggest the D8C if you have the cash.
DMT all the way. The DMT can be used for non norton stones, is flat, and can be used on Ebay specials in those rare occasions when needed.
I got 2, the 120 and the 320, both work great. Main flattening with the 120 than on stones over 6k I hit with the 320. The 320 seems to really help out the polishing stones.
Depends. For instance the Naniwa Superstones are so soft that I would not expect them to put any stress on the Norton. I have been using an ordinary $5 hardware silicon carbide stone with some success. I haven't seen all the Naniwas but the couple that I have wouldn't harm a flea.

The Norton stone will need lapping on an ongoing basis. Most wont touch them. If you watch any of Glen's(Gssixgun) vids he is always using the D8C. That is the DMT 8x3 Course Continuous. This seems to be the most common lapping stone. Just make sure you break it in before use as a lapping stone.

+1 on the D8C.
In addition to being clean, and cutting quickly, they leave a superior finish on your stones (my 325 leaves a better finish that 600 'grit' silicon carbide paper); they are a very useful hone to have around the house.
Recently I have been using mine for re-beveling some of my knives - worked superbly :)
It can flatten virtually any stone (though you do have to be careful with some if the harder naturals (novaculite type stones)) and will easily cut most metals :)
I wouldn't be without mine !

I have both and recommend both. Here is why:
New hones need to be flattened and the DMT is a lot slower at this process.
The norton lapping hone in my honing cupboard gets used on new hones only. I use the DMT once the hone is flattened. Both products work very well for the tasks I use them for.
I do not feel the the tolerances on the norton are as good, but it will take an irregular new hone (the all are) and get it close, quickly...then the DMT finished the job.
I found the opposite to be true with my Norton Flattening Stone and DMT 6". I must have a bad Norton FS, i gave up flattening with it. Took entirely too long to put level the rest of the Norton stones. The DMT blasted right though.Quote:
