Ebay lot - Help identifying
So I was bidding on a razor from this guy, and I figured I'd throw in a bid on the hones too. Turns out I lost the razor but won the hones.
I was wondering if anyone might have any thoughts as to what I've won. I know it will be easier to tell once I have them in person, but I'm very curious.
Three vintage sharpening stones / hones, various grits - eBay (item 320429230307 end time Oct-04-09 19:12:12 PDT)
Item number 320429230307 in case the link doesn't work
Thanks.

Dunno what you have there Dylan but if you want to double your money PM your Paypal address.
Kidding aside, the one in the case looks very like a charnley forest to me. The gray stone might be a Thuringan and at first glance the other looks like a natural coticule but if it is the closeups show it to be unlike any I've see so I'm not sure. Heck of a haul though for the money.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I don't know about letting them all go, but if it turns out I don't want any, you'll be the first to know (I got to play with at CF and didn't really like it).
Thanks for the guesses. Here's hoping that gray one is a Thuringian (I quite want one). That combo stone has me very curious as well. It looks like a natural to me, based on the uneven seam, but I don't know what she would be.

The combo looks like the Norton oil stones. I don't think its norton but thats what it looks like. I have a gray/black Norton oil stone and the seem isn't even close to straight...

Very sorry to disappoint you, but to me they all look artificial and too coarse for razor honing.
The grey one does have the appearance of a Thuringian from a distance, but in the two pictures with the ruler you can see the gritty edges and surfaces.
The leather on the box suggests a fine knife or razor hone, but the whetstone itself it very gritty too, both the surface and the sides. In the first picture and the one with the ruler across, there is space between stone and box - I would say that this is not the original hone. To me it does not at any rate look like a CF.
The pinkish side of the double sides looks quite all right en profile, and very smooth in the composite pictures too, but the close-up reveals it's probably too coarse for razors too.
Just my $ 0.02 - I really, really hope I'm wrong...

Thanked: 7looks like an alox combo stone, carborundum in box, and not sure of the green/gray, could be slate.

Thanked: 11I'm with Oldengaerde on this one.
The combo hone is definately synthetic and almost certainly too coarse for razors. The one in the box also seems quite coarse. The grey one, I'm not so sure about. It may be a Thuringian/slate type hone but I doubt it. If it is, then it looks very pock marked and may be unsuitable for razors anyway.
They all look like they could be very useful for tools and knives though.

They came today. I've just had my first look. The larger one that was not in the box is a dual grit hone, so no Escher there. The one in the box actually fit in there quite well, so I think that the box may have been original. The orange and blue/black one is the only one that's not dished/covered in grime, but it doesn't look like anything speical. They all smell of oil. I'll post more info or at least pics and a request for more info once I clean them up a bit.
