My new Nakayama

Picked it up from 330mate. The guy also gave me free Nagura(looks synthetic but I can't be positive)
Used for first time to work on a razor I sharpened for a member here.
I used the stone after 16k Glass stone, and it gave me a smoother bevel.
Cutting speed so far medium to fast.
For the money I payed this is a steal imo.

COOL! It looks like a synthetic nagura or one of those "heaven" grade stones JimR was posting about a little while ago.

Judging by the shape, I would say it's synthetic.

i also ordered a nakayama from this seller...when i asked him the grit size he told me could be from 8000 to 20000...will see when the stone come here...

yes naturals have ranges.
Roughly
Coarse: up to 1-2k
Medium:2k- 6k
Plishing: 6k+
The grit breaks as you use the stone, the longer you spend on the stone with the same slurry the finer the grit will become.

I have read that no one, not even those who spend their lives mining Japanese hones, will estimate the grit of a Nakayama. This may apply to other types of stones too. It's also a matter of how your particular hone cuts, not just what grit it is.

Meters? Because the grit gets so high you need two meters to display the number?

On a serious note, is the blue writing on the hone stuff you wrote? Is that a translation of the characters (kanji?) or just a description of the hone.

That was written on the stone, I am hoping someone that knows Japanese can translate the kanji for me.

Before I got my Nakayama from O_S I tried to pin him down to give me an estimate of the stone I was getting. His response was exactly what you were saying and he would not even make an attempt to relate it other stones and their respective grits either. I know some people are usng their Nakayamas as finishing stones, but to be honest, I think that is in some ways an insult to the potential of the Nakayama. I have found that they are almost finishing system in and of themselves. From what I understand, they are all different fromach other so this may not be an accurate assesment.
I could not believe the speed the Nakayama takes a hard blade from DMT scratches to finish. For me there is much to learn about them and what they can do.I hope you have fun with yours too!

You are indeed correct that they can be quick cutters. I'm not sure which DMT you are referring to, but I've gone from a BBW and a DT straight to my Asagi and got fantastic results. The BBW and DT give about the same finish (I couldn't tell them apart in a blind shave test) and I have seen them estimated at 6-8k.

Usually, I will use the 8k DMT before going to Nakayama in it's own slurry. I have not tried off the 1200 DMT but it might even work off of that too.

Hi Sham,
I must have a fast cutter. 20 strokes with slurry, 15 with water and I am ready for my final touch. I just did two blades that way and counted the stroke off.

Are you saying you did this after the DMT 1200 or the DMT 8k? Off the 8k, it's believable, but off the 1200 sounds wrong to me...

It was off the 8k for sure. I think I could work off the 1200 but that would take some time like Sham said. The kicker is I got into the Nakayama to see how it measured up to the other finishers and I end up changing my whole progression. Thats what happens to people that hang out SRP.
