Hi everyone,
I picked up this japanese waterstone (synthetic) on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....view=all&tid=0
I'm still in the process of restoring my first razor, and am trying to get hold of a few stones that will allow me to put an edge on it when it is cleaned up.
Anyone come across one of these before? Any ideas what approx grit it may be?

Thought I'd add a scan of the box in case someone on the board can actually read japanese :) The stone came from a guy on ebay who sells a variety of random japanese tools. Front of the box says "White stone - deluxe hone", and the stone itself is around 70 x 50 x 200mm.

Sorry, but I can't help you on the stone itself, just on the label:
To the left it says to please soak the 'howaitostōn' (phonetic for 'whitestone') in water for five minutes prior to use. The right seems a brand name Kai (oldfashioned kanji for world) Seki (or Shaku; stone) Tō (or Fuji; wisteria, name kanji) Sei (manufacture).

Katakana and hirugana as competely leeched from my memory since high school, and kanji was just so scary that I shied away from it completely.
I lapped the stone today and chamfered the edges. The surface is a creamy white, and to touch feels smoother than a cheap 8000 grit ceramic that I bought on ebay a few weeks ago, so I'm not so sure it will work for setting the bevel of my razor.
Thus far I have:
The aforementioned Jap waterstone of unknown grit
8000 grit ceramic
Peoples Hone of Indeterminate Grit (Chinese 12k)
0.5u diamond paste.
And a complete lack of fingerprints on the tips of my right hand from hours of hand sanding.
Am also going to hassle a local cobbler for stop leather.
Any suggestions for a cheap and cheerful bevel setting stone?
