Right now I shave right off the 8k side of my Norton. I have some CrO on a piece of leather, but I'm just not sure that it's being effective off of the 8k.
So, if you use a norton and you were to hit one "polisher" after the 8k, what would you (do you) use?
Price completely irrelevant and definitely going to Chrox afterwards? I'd probably go for a 12k superstone or something around that or maybe Escher (ask an escher guy about this, I haven't used one).
Price relevant? Swaty (10-11k barber hone) or china 12k
Maybe forgo the Chrox and price irrelevant again? Jnat finisher.
I used to do 4k JIS to Swaty to .5 chrox... then I got a Jnat... the Chrox is more agressive than my Jnat. It's pretty wierd to go from honing on a rock to stropping on a paste and introduce scratches under magnification.
I don't know about the technical stuff, micron sizes , scratches and that but I have found diamond spray or paste on a felt hanger or a paddle will quicken an edge off of an 8k quite a bit. Chrom ox will tame a harsh edge IME and improve it some. Here is an archived thread with some tech stuff.

A 12k would work real nice before the CrOx and leather. Awhile back I read a thread by one of the members on how to make a cheap 30k hone, Chromium Oxide on balsa wood, it made a big difference in my blades. I also use CrOx on leather (rough side) before the CrOx on balsa.
I've not tried this, so I can't be sure, but I think that going from a Norton 8k to the C12k, given how slow the C12k is, would not be the best jump. I think Norton 8k to a good barber hone to ChromeOx would work better on a budget. If you have more to spend, more options open up.
1 micron diamond or Dovo black then CrO would be good. If you state what you're looking to spend then people can dial in on recommendations.
A coticule w/ water only would also do the trick. 20-30 light laps should be sufficient.
Whats the aprox grit size of a coticule? I was thinking about getting the Naniwa 12k. Not to say that I wouldn't mind spending less, just that I was thinking about it.Quote:

FWIW, I'll throw in a Shapton Pro 15K (which is what I usually use between the norton 8k and the CrO ";" )
DMT D8C would work for lapping. If you want the Naniwa super smooth, you might wanna hit sandpaper for a tiny bit after, but really, I doubt you'd need to.Quote:

Variable like all other naturals, but the general consensus is ~8K. Keep in mind, it's the "points" of the garnets that do the cutting & those are variable too !:rock: In actual fact, it's pretty useless to assign a grit rating to naturals & coticules in particular, becuase they can be used so many different ways. gugi's spot on. As they say, no amount of hones will turn you into a honemeister. A honester, maybe. And it is entirely possible to go from the 8k Norton to Chromium Oxide.
Dont be like me. Stick to one set of hones(Your Nortons) and master them before buying more hones.
Trust me, you will thank me later.
Alright, so I re-pasted my CrO strop, and I my razors got significantly sharper when I stropped a few times on it.

There are so many choice to follow an 8k, it's not even funny. The most affordable would be the Chinese 12k, with a slurry you can cut your honing time down.
I guess the next most affordable and a great hone is the Naniwa 12k. It really is a great finisher, I know it's one of Lynn's favorites. Now, if you have the cash, A Japanese Natural is about the best IMHO. I love my Nakayama's. Then, Escher. They are wonderful stones. I rotate between two because they are my favorite finishers....
I have the Shapton 16k too. I really don't use it much.
That's just rocks, You have Diamond Pastes, Sprays and Dovo Pastes, Chromium Oxide, etc.....
SRD has a hard wool felt strop, when used with their .5 diamond spray, it'll put one hell of an edge on your blade...I love using that strop....
