I prefer hones at all levels because I enjoy everything about working on hones and I don't enjoy stropping my razors. Results wise, Lynn showed me how nice a little .5 diamond on felt can be after your finishing hone, but I'm still happy enough with my edges of my finisher that I don't feel the need to buy the diamond spray... just now.
Personally, for a 1 stone honing solution, I use a belgian yellow coticule. It is an extremely versatile stone that can both set a bevel, and finish a razor rather well. Great for a 1 hone type of guy, or a budget. Although I use various other hones for razors, I enjoy the versatility of a belgian coticule the most.

Planning on doing normal maintenance honing. Nothing too over the top (yet). I'm not planning to hone anything that wasn't shave ready when I got it but wouldn't mind having that ability later on.
