I know it's been asked dozens of times before, but "I saw this hone in an antique store and...". Anyways one surface was blue the other was reddish brown, any ideas what type of stone this might be? For $5 I'll probably grab it, along with a couple of others to play around with, but want to make sure it would be use-able for straight razors.
I have no idea what hone it could be without seeing pictures. Others might be able to chime in... But for $5 you cant go wrong :D
India combination oilstone perhaps?
Does it look like a combo barber hone? Dual Grit Swaty Hone
That color combination could conceiveably be a natural combination BBW/Coticule, some are quite red, and could possibly be oxidized BUT as suggested, more likely a synthetic combo stone.
If either surface could be called 'gritty' then chances are good it's not a keeper. If the border between colors is irregular or uneven then it's very likely a natural hone and you got lucky. ;)
It's probably impossible to tell with just a description of the colors. For all we know, it could be gunk on the hone and it could be a totally different color once it's cleaned.
