Did I find me an Escher?

lurking in the recessed bowels of the flea market..a little blueish green stone. I recall seeing a thread with the discussion of "is this an Esher?"

This doesnt have the word Esher on it, but didnt somebody say the goblet is the Esher trade mark? (or "shults mark" as it says on this one)

the label is kind of tattered, but other than that, the stone is in really good shape. But I fear it is for more expert hands than mine, being as small as it is. (approx 6 x 9/8 x 5/8)

Did they make an american import stone? e pluribus unum indeed!

AFAIK if it has the E&Co in the cup it is an Escher. Nice find and I'm sure you'll put it to good use. :tu

Excellant find! :tu :tu Looks like an Escher to me. Not bad for a buck. I got mine thrown into a lot I was purchasing at a flea market. Best place to find these gems and the price is right!

The goblet logo does look like the one on some Eschers. The rest of the label is rather different. This could be an imitation, or an export variety used by Escher, or one of the many logos used by Escher affiliates. I wouldn't care too much: vintage* labeled Thuringians are all fine hones. Just try and see.


*There seems to be some spread in what people consider vintage. When it comes to hones, I use vintage when I mean pre-WWII.

and I care what its called, because if its not suitable for amatuer hands like mine, I can sell it for enough on FeeBay, to buy myself a nice new blade, or put a deposit on a Jnat!

Oh, cool, do bring it indeed. I'm not really too knowledgable on Thurries, but we can compare it to my unlabled one. Cept that means you'll have to bring two blades for us to hone, so we can finish one on each hone.

Suitable schmootable. Some day, you will not be an amateur, and between now and that day, you may never see a similar hone you can afford. Unless you really don't want something, you shouldn't sell it. If it's nice and you are worried about damaging it, put it somewhere safe.

I'll keep it safe for you until such time as you feel comfortable using it. No, don't thank me. It is just part of the job.

I'ma bringing lots of blades. Some for me, some for anybody that might want to practice on. As long as they have somewhat steady hands, I dont mind. (grinding the scales on the stone might have a deleterious effect on my mental health)

A few spare pucks of soap, a spare brush, a spare mug, a spare bottle of wine, spare cookies.., no, wait, those are mine...

Can you post some photos of the stone, especially the back side and the sides, also the stone dimensions? I have two Eschers and both have rough grind marks on the back side, and measure 5 X 2.5 X 3/4 inches. One came from an antique store with the label and is blue, the other one is greenish yellow and came in a lot of eBay hones, without a label. Both are easy to raise a slurry on, which is a creamy blue gray to blue green color. Congratulations on your great find! It is a Thuringian at least, and likely an Escher IMO.

I saw it here, today. I even got to hone on it too. I think it performed very well; certainly a nice hone. You should go to more meets...

My restoration process will require a professional, as I am unskilled at such tasks. Unfortunately, I dont see anybody advertising this service in the classifieds.

I will try to get those pictures up later today though.
