I have an old barbers hone on the way, I was told the only chips are at the head, behind the manufacturers stamp. But if there are chips in the hone itself, how would I go about lapping them out? I know it can be done, but I'm not sure how I would go about doing so. Just planning ahead, in case I need to(-:
Hey thanks, looks like I have what I need to know, just in case. I do have an antique peddle powered grinding wheel. I was thinking about using that, but the wheel broke and I don't feel like buying a new one.
Read that carefully,,, Josh points out the DMT's for barber's hones and I wholeheartedly agree...The 120 grit for chips and lapping too flat...The 325 grit for a nice smooth finsh..
Be sure to pay yourself $10/hour while lapping.
I don't have the money for more stones at the minute, so if the stone arrives and does have chips in it, my aunt was looking for a way to punish a cousin that just got kicked out of school so maybe I'll put him to work(-:
They are not that bad to lap....Depending on the condition.
I have broke out the wet/dry before, on the really tough buggers

Someone with more experience than I can then comment on what might
apply to your hone.
If I have a barber hone with a chip and it doesn't affect honing I leave it the way it is. If it does, well, I have a lot of work to do.
Well I got it and it was kind of ok, one side still has a chip in it so I had to change the way I hone, but it works great.
