I GOT A DEVONSHIRE!!!!
Boy. Since I read about those things on here I've been searching all over the place to find one. I emailed everyone I could think of that might have one. I didn't even know what color they were or what they looked like or anything.
I spent a lot of time doing research to figure out what the hell a Devonshire oilstone even looks like.
After hours and hours of research I still wasn't certain. I mean, how do you know what a hone looks like if no one has one to take a picture of?
Well anyway I got some emails back from people wishing me luck in my search. A lot of people were really helpful in the process. I did manage to find a guy that said he had one. We spent a fair amount of time talking back and forth trying to figure out what would be the best way to negotiate a price, and for me to examine the stone to see if it was indeed the elusive devonshire.
In the end the first guy ended up being a total flake. I managed to get a picture of him. It's below as picture #1. If you run into that guy, watch out. (consider that fair warning)
Anyhow, I had all but given up on the search... I was thinking, jeez, with all these people willing to sell their souls, I could have a bidding war on souls if I just got my hands on one of these things.
Well, patience is a virtue! After all that time looking, I got an email.
The email was from a dude that was really really into honing razors. He said he had an extra Devonshire, and it was mine for the taking. Granted, I would have to pay a ton for it... But, HEY!!! A REAL DEVONSHIRE OIL STONE!!!
So, I agreed to meet up with the guy. I was a little surprised at his appearance when we met. Apparently he had recently become a big fan of the HHT, as most of his hair was gone... No matter, the Devonshire was nearly within my grasp.
So, there in the far corner of a Wal-Mart parking lot, he went in the trunk of his car. He slowly unwrapped the stone from a towel...
I was nervous and a little skeptical at first. But, upon viewing the markings, there was no doubt left in my mind.
The markings made it clear. I FINALLY HAD A DEVONSHIRE OILSTONE!!!
I tried not to smile too much as we completed the transaction. I didn't want to give away that he was selling me one of the rarest pieces of rock on the planet. But, I managed to get out ok. The price didn't get jacked up or anything.
So.... I got home and started honing some razors on this thing. I was a little disappointed. I thought the Devonshire would be a finisher, but it really feels more to me like a low grit stone. I didn't know what to think, so I showed the picture to another member of this site.
He told me that I had been had. I was a little disappointed to find out that this may not be a real Devonshire.
I am looking for second opinions though. Below you'll find a picture of the trickster that tried to sell me a fake, then the Devonshire itself, then the guy I bought it from (the guy with the great haircut).
Let me know what you think. :)
