Does anyone know if there is a difference between the vintage Thurigan hone and new

Hi I just purchased a nice sized Thurigan hone from Timbertools and have not received it yet. I was wandering is there a noticeable difference between a so called vintage Thurigan and the newer ones? Are these two items the same stone for the most part the only difference being no more that the difference between two different coticule, some are a little nice that others? I am knew to honing, so my last question is, would this be a good final polish stone or I guess I should say a maintenance stone. I buy all my razors new from SRD and keep them in good shape but when they might need a little touch up is this an acceptable stone to go to for a few laps when the strop is not doing it. Or can anyone else tell me about the different uses for this stone or how they have used it in there honing process. Has anyone used it with a lot of slurry as a cutter or just simply a final polish stone. Any info would be great.

I have limited experience with the current Thuringans. I had a Muller which was very good but sold it. My guess is they will be close to stones from any era but that is only a guess. Be on the lookout for occlusions as Tony Miller used to carry the NOS Thuringans but gave it up because a large percentage of what he received was unsuitable for razor honing due to occlusions. IME with the one Muller and quite a few Eschers and Hohenzollern Thuringans they are finishing stones primarily with or without slurry. You'll have to play with your particular stone to see where it fits into your honing progression. GL with it.

I don't like the new ones at all. IME, there not nealy as fine as the old ones. I think the new ones finish more around 8 K from what I've experienced especially the big dark ones. I have one at home and I never use it because I don't like the finish compared to an Escher or my Vintage Thurri in the wooden box. Have someone send it to you and see if you like it before you buy it.

in my limited experience with new ones i would say it is not as good as old ones.

I have one from TT and one MST. I do not own an Escher.

The MST hone is a much finer grit. It is a very nice stone. If an Escher is better than it - I must have one ... or two. MST hone I have only used it to sharpen a knife and I can a razor edge with it. I think it is a finer grit than the two coticules I own. It is difficult to describe the consistency of the MST hone. It is soft and almost seems like some man made composition. Sort of like metal polisher. I love this hone.

I would use the TT hone to sharpen horse shoes. Wish I had that 2 bills back.

I have four Thuringian hones: two vintages, one MST Müller (light grey, 4.5”) and one MST Müller of larger size, almost 10”, dark grey...plus Naniwas&Coticules :w


Yes, the “new” Thuringians are different from the vintage ones, but IMHO, they are all good finishers. They have different colors compared to the vintage stones, and the “honing feeling” is a little different too.


My 10 “ “new MST Thuri” has no pyrite inclusion or other imperfections: it is very smooth…almost as the vintage ones. The 4.5” light grey feels higher in grit than the 10” and it’s smoother too.


The vintage Thuringians polish the edge a little shiner than the new ones, but the shave from the new is nice too. I recently honed a 5/8 Heljestrand with this progression: Naniwa Superstones 1 000 – 3 000 – 8 000 – dark grey 10” Thuringian – 5 laps on CrOx (felt paddle strop) - latigo paddle strop, and I had a very nice shaving experience...


I’d define the edge from the MST Thuringian “crispy” in a positive way. Not as smooth as the one coming from a coticule or from a Naniwa 12 000...just a little bit different but I liked it .


I tried the MST thuringians after the Naniwa 10 000 too, and the edge was again improved (a little more sharp) so I’d guess that the grit of these new Thuringians should be in the 10 -12 000 area.

Thank everyone so much for the info I somehow got unsubscribed from my own thread and missed all the great responses and ended up reposting. Anyhow I just received the hone today at it also is one of the large 10" hones. I guess I'll just have to try and mess around with it. It is the exact same as the large one you have posted in the photos the box appears to be the same so I hope that I can get equivalent results seeing as to the price I paid for it. I think I may have spent too much but at the time I didn't really do my homework and it took forever to arive I'll post some pictures and my thought's. Again thank you everyone.
