I've not run into the small boxed thurys you speak of. I have had a couple of large Hohenzollerns that were probably equal to an Escher.
I've not owned either, but given that they are the same type of natural hones sold by different companies, I'm not sure any "rules" would apply. I'd bet some of one are better than some of the other, and vice versa.
well i have escher and while the edges have been smooth . Sham honed me a couple of razors my razors i sent to him and he did a very nice job , i new he would . i compared them to my coti edges and to be fair the differance is very close both hones leave a smooth edge with a differant feel , at least i no what expect from escher and have a good bench mark with shams help. like every one says its personal thing with differant hones and the finish they leave . may be if the thurys were fetching 700 dollars we'd think they were the king pin.
I have an escher and another stone that has identical label but does not say escher so I guess it will qualify as thuringian, they both give similar edges.
I have used two small boxed Thuringians and one small boxed "dark blue" Escher, and the edges they give are indistinguishable in my estimation. The biggest factor for me is the size and shape of the hone, which takes some adjustment if you are used to a hone that is the width or nearly the width of the razor blade. For some razors, like those with a slight smile or curve, I like the thinner hones better because they require a steady, even X stroke that seems to work better with these blades. I can't say that I feel any difference between the Thuringians and the Escher that I have used, at least when it comes to the finished razor edge.
There is different small boxed thuringian out there.
you will need to pay attention very close to find out .
one of them will say for finest tools(never mention razor name),next one will mention razor hone.
Now there is a differences among them.
Escher, thuringian mention for razors, for finest tool one.
There is Another small box thuringian out there but they do have escher logo in the middle this one will be very very close to dark blue escher .
What Jimmy mention small box stone (intersting name has) is same as escher Jimmy is right about it.
hope this helps.
I've had several of both and statistically they're the same. Any difference in how a particular hone finishes has no correlation to the presence of an escher label.
Seems to me the more they cost the better they seem to hone. :roflmao:roflmao
i brought the one in classified. reason being i have a couple of razors that a couple of warps and i thought this size would work a treat , i will use it to keep the razor refreshed. i read that the turys cut slightly quiker than coticule when used with water? this one has a light blue label in it. the hone is a fair price as i have seen these on cetain vendors website for double the price i paid.
I have a dark blue Escher, and one of those boxed Thuri's. I think the little Thuri gives a better edge. Go figure.
I have a new Thurry I just got that is dark blue, almost black except when you see the run off in the sink when I lapped it. I am assuming both of
them come in this color but if you have no labels to tell you is there any way you can tell the difference between an Escher and a Thurry?
Does the size matter?
When you say "new," do you mean new to you or one of the new ones? Guys have been saying that the new new ones are not as fine as the old ones - more like 8-10k.
If you are talking about the old ones, Escher was just a company that sold Thuringians. Escher:Company::Thurry:Hone. Maybe Escher had higher standards than other companies as far as what they would sell, but there is no way for us to know - we can only speculate. There is also a chance that any vintage thurry is an Escher that lost it's label. Not to mention recently there have been "Eschers" popping up on ebay that people seem to think have been "relabeled." IMO, if it's a vintage Thurry, use it and love it and forget about the brand name.
As far as hone size, that is entirely personal preference. The big ones seem to fetch more on ebay because, well, I won't even go into that. For actual usage, whatever you are comfortable with.
I can't say the age of the stone but it came with a slurry stone which used to be the end so I like that.
Right now on day one it is neck and neck with my 12K Nanawa and it is like a race that goes back and forth.
The best part of this stone is that it is a good inch thick and I already used the side to get a stubborn heel sharpened right up after not having any luck with the wide top.
I think that is I work at the technique it can be better than my 12K so I am very happy.
Next on my list is a Jnat, but that isn't until I master what I have first.
