I Need A New Hone

I just ordered a 220/1000 Norton to replace my aluminum oxide setting stone. I'm sure it will be just as good as the Norton I already own but this is not my problem. After using it for quite some time I have come to the conclusion that my coticule bout is only suitable for sharpening my hatchet and other tools that I can clamp in my vice and run the stone across. It is just too small for me to use on straight razors correctly.

Therefore, I am looking for any ideas on a relatively cheap stone to bridge the gap between my Norton 4k/8k and Chinese 12k. I've always liked the feel of natural stones over synthetic but I just can't afford $130 for a new coticule. I don't think I can just jump from my norton to the chinese stone as I would have to do something like 100 laps, and with my skill level I don't think that's feasible.

So, any ideas?

You could try the Naniwa 10k or the Naniwa 12k. They may even make your C12k unnecessary.

Anyway if yer set on a natural middle stone there are some in the 5k range...
But I don't know of any that are fast or even medium...Maybe a TOS maybe one of the Japanese naturals too... but you would be losing sharpness from the N8k doing that

Keep in mind that a CH12K can be used just like the Coticule with slurry....I have never used anything between the N8k and the CH12k except 10 laps of very light slurry and 20 laps of clear water :)


Edit: Have you tried dropping everything after the N8k and shaving with just that??? No paste, no stones above that one????

I have a rubbing stone and there's feet on the bottom of my stone for good grip, but I can never seem to get a slurry going. I've tried rubbing the stone different ways but nothing seems to happen. I've gotten white marks across the hone but no cloudy water.

If you already have a Norton 4/8k, there is no need to bridge the gap between the Norton 8k and the Chinese hone. That that transition is just fine. As Glen mentioned, the Chinese hone cuts faster with slurry and then you can remove or dilute the slurry for the final polish. It works just fine.

So you have the Norton 4/8 and a Chinese 12k. That should be OK. You really don't need anything in between them. As Dylan stated, You can get a Nani 10 or 12k which will make you C12k obsolete....IMHO....

hmmmmm what do you use to lap your stones????
I use a DMT 325 to raise slurries really fast or a small hard Arkansas stone...

From what you just said though I would bet you have one of the really hard Ch12k's there are variations in these too...

You could also try coticule slurry on the C12k. Just rub it with your coti bout. Try a really light coti slurry then rinse it off and finish with just water.
