What a bummer Sham, the corner is chipped. I'll trade ya a Swaty for it. ...... a 3 line. :deal:
Sweet looking hone, Sham
If I can ever pry one out of the hands of an axe-man (I know there's no chance of getting it out of Sham's), I would love to try honing on one of those.
Ron i am not sure you remember or not. i had another one which has been used a lot i mean it. there is may be only 1/8 left.
i tried that stone .
what i did i honed and finished the blade an escher then i tried this stone.
edge did get sharper. how i have no idea. until that time i was thinking Escher edge is the sharpest edge you could get.
i did get surprised.
how it could be.
this one is almost never been used i may try this one too before i do anything to it.
Sham, Congrats on the fantastic hone!
Congratulations, you lucky guy! I have also been looking for this hone a long time, without enough $$ whenever one comes up on eBay. I know you will give us a honing report and I look forward to hearing how this legendary hone performs for you. Thanks for the pictures.
For those reading this thread who are not familiar with this hone .... In Australia they have competitions chopping down trees and the ax men swear by this hone for refreshing their edges. To the point where they routinely go for between $300 and $500 USD on ebay.
I've never seen one up close and personal. It mystifies me that what is essentially a barber hone could be outstanding on two cutting tools as far apart in metallurgy as an ax and a straight razor. I look forward to hearing from Sham when he has had a chance to try some razors on the celebrated Norton ax man's hone.
