Naniwa wearing out?

Here's the lolipop question...how many razors to the bottom of a Naniwa stone?

After honing a number of wedges in particular, I've noticed a moderate amount of wear on my Naniwa stones and I'm concerned that I'm only going to get a couple hundred antique store finds honed before these guys look like 100# paper. I imagine if all I were doing was touching up razors, these things would last for a generation, but antique store finds are killing my hones!

So the question is, has anyone had noticable wear and tear on their Naniwas?

How often do you lap them? You only really need to lap if they are heavily loaded with swarf or have glazed. Most of the time rinsing them under running water and a rub with your hand will clean them off.

Or too much pressure as Jimmy suggests?

Probably not pressure as much as rolling-X's on lopsided wedges tend to wear the hones in some areas as opposed to the entire thing and then lapping them flat causes wear.

You have to rid yourself from laparitis. Some guys would lap their hones as soon as lap a razor. They won't last long if you get carried away. I had a Norton 4K and I almost got infected with that affliction. Just about wore the thing away before I took the cure.

I have a 1K and 5K with over 3,000 razors honed on them and they are both still usable.

Well, with Lynn's response I'd say that there is something up...3000 to less than 300. Just another disease of the straight razor "sport". HAD, RAD, SAD, Laparitis... They are all curable, just takes time and a WHOLE LOT of patience. Best of luck to you!

Possibly, you need to add something lower than the 1K. Maybe, a DMT 325. While DMTs wear out too, spending 5 minutes on a DMT to spare yourself 30 minutes on a 1K seems to make sense to me.

do you tape the razors' spines when you hone :p
