In the absence of a 'both' option, I voted it doesn't matter. Always call Manmades, hones though.
Yep the "it doesn't matter" option covers the both answer :) I think anyway...
Seems like I always get the Manmades called a hone.... but I sometimes miss on the Naturals ...
I voted doesn't matter. Then got to thinking and did an advanced search for posts I have made using "natural". I found that I used it most often to refer to coticule combos that aren't glued. I did use natural stones and natural hones in various posts. I didn't search for synthetic but I know that I frequently refer to synthetic stones. I probably call these rocks stones more often than hones one way or the other.
For me I call my naturals stones (sounds a bit odd now that I think of it). But really no logic or thought involved in this terminology.
For me, it depends on my mood, who I'm talking to, how my last shave was, the phase of the moon, the time of day, and the color of the shirt I'm wearing at the time.
on a knee-jerk reaction I said it didn't matter... but I do find myself saying stone for naturals and hone for synthetics. But I wouldn't start a fight with anyone over it.:argue:
I guess if it is glued to a piece of wood, or a different grit "stone" it becomes a hone. I would call it a stone if it has that " just from the quarry" look ( slurry stone included! );)
Sharpening gizmos or gizmoes. I guess that depends on who is VP.
:beer2:
Ahhhhh Bruce
Thanks my friend, I needed a good chuckle on a deary Sat afternoon sitting at work....
If it's natural it's a stone. The action is honing though.
220-221.....whatever it takes.........:)
Half the time, I can't remember the dogs names. Old age or gettin' stoned too much in my yoot..........hahahahahahahaha
Have fun,
Lynn
It's all just sharpening media to me.
I use hone and stone pretty much interchangeably!
I tend to call natural stones "naturals" when I refer to them though, and call them by their specific name if I'm referring to one in particular.
A stone is just a small rock. A hone is a stone or rock that's really good for sharpening stuff. So I voted hone regardless of how it's made,
Mick
I refer to manmades as manmades and naturals as naturals. Just to mix it up I also refer to hones as hones and stones as stones :) I'll even use whetstone, waterhone, naturally man made, diamond plate, sand paper, pasted strap (I knew you'd like that one), unnaturally formed, naturally manufactured, and USO (unidentified sharpening object)
Nothing is set in hone. I call 'em how I see 'em!
What about sharpening doo-hickeys...?
Do you mean thingumy bobs Stu? :)
