I just picked up a 118s and the seller recommended it be used with honing oil. One side looks very clean and generates soap bubbles while honing with plain water. The other side looks like it might have seen a touch of oil although it may just be dirty. Upon doing a search here, the 1903 Carborundum catalog says use either water or oil for its razor hones (see link below). What do you folks recommend?
