I recently acquired this "Celebrated German Water Hone".
After using it once, I noticed that the label got wet, and I'm thinking that I'm going to end up destroying it with continued use.
Should I apply some polyurethane to it or is that some kind of hone-purist's worst nightmare? Resale value isn't an issue as I plan to keep it. But on the other hand, I don't want to commit the equivalent of "refinishing" an 18th Century Highboy...
I've had very good luck with a product by Krylon called Preserve It seen here. I've used it on Eschers and others with success.
I have used clear nail polish in the past and it works too. It also doesn't yellow like other stuff can. I believe Sham and I both do the nail polish thing and it works.
some have strongly recomended against nail polish (i think because it cracks) although it works..
i have yet to hear any recomendations against polyurethane.
I mixed up some clear cheap epoxy and spread it over one of mine.
It's glossy now to look at...but bulletproof
Like you, I don't plan on giving it up either, but my label was part gone
and I didn't want to lose any more from use.
