Restoring a hone box?

Hey guys,
wanted to ask people's opinion on this one. I have a pike's Belgian hone and I got it with the box some time ago from an antique store, but the box is not in the best of shapes and I don't want it to get any worst. I know it's not an escher, but I would really like to preserve it.
What would you guys suggest to do with it?
My thoughts are to reinforce the box from the inside with added (glued?) cardboard and then cover the surface with something that'll protect it.

Consider speaking with an antique book restorer. They can really perform magic on old books. There should even be some forums somewhere. Old boxes and books are made of the same basic stuff: cardboard and paper and ink. They'll have some insight.

Your Pike Coticule is a beautiful and rare stone, and though the box is clearly in bad shape, it may be worth the effort to clean it up.

Speaking of antique book restorers ...... A late friend of mine owned such an establishment in Montclair, NJ back in the '80s. He recommended Sobo glue is really good for reinforcing the worn edges or the box and Krylon Preserve It is what I use for large labels and such. If you've got any books that are beginning to split at the binding Sobo is very good for repairing that condition.
