That's exactly why they glue them. The appearance of the base rock looks like slate to me. The pattern in it and the fissure in it which might be a cleavage line also the spot where there is a separation between the two isn't natural. I still say it's glued. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Had to register just to make a post on this. That is defiantly a BBW and not slate. The purple slurry in the photo is a dead give away. It also looks to my eye to be a natural combo and not a glued up stone...I've only got 1 coti hone and a bout 1 I use as a slurry stone. The hone is a natural combo and the bout is glued to slate. Once you have seen both of together there is no way to mistake a BBW for a piece of slate...That and the glue line is alot more pronounced than what is on that stone.

Congrats you have a natural combo stone!

what I suspected as well, it seems to only have some cracks, when I push down onto the coti the crack basically disappears and you can't even tell it's there
I tried it out and it's definitely BBW,
tried some bbw with slurry and water and the coti with slurry and water, very good results, what you'd expect from a coticule
I like it a lot, coticules ftw
damn I got a nice bargain on this one

Agree completely. The pattern, slurry.etc., clearly identify a BBW. It is not glued. The transition area between yellow and BBW, the smooth, flowing articulation between the two layers, etc., are classic for a natural combo. I have several of these stones. They are unmistakable. Good on ya!

In addition to these hints, there is also the spotting that appears uniformly distributed between both layers. Such similar spotting would be unlikely if these had been glued.
