A norton 4k/8k hone?
Yes!!!!!!!
Yes , if the bevel is set . If the bevel isn't set you will need to begin with a larger grit hone . You can set a bevel with a 4k hone , but it will take forever or longer , to do .
oh baby yes you can! It may take longer than a 1K to set the bevel on the 4K but there's ways around that, making a slurry on the 4K with a diamond plate is one way...
Yes. Norton 3/8k hones were the way to go a few years ago and what I used for a while. 1k hones are nice and reduce the time but are not needed. Learning to hone on the 4/8k may be better in that it takes more strokes to cause any major damage. To get a smooth shave like most of the honemisters put on their razors finer finishing hones are used such as coticules, Eschers, Ck12 and synthetic hones 12k and higher. CrOx and diamond sprays can improve on the Norton 8k finish some. As simple as honing my look in vids or watching someone with experience it usually take most people a bunch of razors to develop their techniques to a point that returns smooth and sharp edges on a variety of razor types.
Yup the Norton 4/8k is a staple stone. It's the only stone I used in my early days. Once HAD grabs ya though... it's all over :p
I bought a 220/1000 and 4k/8k set of Norton's from SRD.
I highly recommend them to you Sixx. You have been buying a slew of razors off the Bay and these plus that Barber hone you got will serve you well.. I just honed up 2 eBay purchases tonite, took just over an hour. They were both in great shape when I bought them, so I went right to the 1000, set the bevel, then onto the 4k then 8k then my Swaty. I'll shave with them tomorrow and see how I did, but looking through my 60x loupe (another recommendation, 60 cents off eBay) they look like they are ready for they rotation.
jcsixx,
+1 :)
The Norton 4/8 also a good route to follow to fully get to grips with honing. The goal to get a shave ready blade off the 8k.
I did not go along this path when I started honing, and I now wish I had !
(I was too reliant on abrasive pastes rather than getting the best edge possible off the stones).
I am now 're-learning' how to hone, 'properly' this time !!! :)
Good luck !
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
Can/will you? :)
As long as the bevel is set along the length of the edge, of course you can. The other stone you got (in the eBay purchase) would be the finisher after the 8k, of course, IF it is properly lapped... do you have a proven flat lapping/flattening stone for those synthetic waterstones and the finishing stone? If not you need a lapper.
+ 1 that has been said before: 4/8 K is enough to get a good shave.
Remember that past generations had much lower standards when honing their edges. Stones of such fine grit were very rare and expensive.
Lapping stones? Which stones do I need to get?
Thanks for all your help fellas!
I got the Norton 220 lapping stone with my 2 combination stones. I hear a Diamond plate works too, but the one I had had alot of wear, so I got the Norton. My understanding is you can also lap with sandpaper..
A DMT 325 diamond plate will take care of most of your lapping and slurry making needs.
Huge plus 1
The Norton 220 is not a lapping stone per se, the larger Norton lapping plate is...
But honestly the smartest money you will ever spend on a plate is the 325 DMT it is Soooooooooo versitile... Works on just about everything for lapping and slurry, and can jump in and do extreme repair work on razors :)
The 220 side of your Norton is NOT for lapping. It has limited use for razors because, though it is a low grit, it is very soft. Norton does make a lapping hone that has deep diagonal grooves cut into it. It will work just fine for lapping your other Norton hones and water stones, but woe to he who tries to use it on a natural stone or barber hone. Also, the lapping hone occasionally needs to be lapped with sandpaper on a flat surface.
I misspoke in my previous statement, the 220K is a different stone than the lapping stone. I have the lapping stone, and a 220/1k combo and a 4k/8k combo. Not sure what brain fart caused me to call the lapping stone a 220K.
My mistake, I need to not reply to these boards after a certain time of night.
Forgive me, please.
I lap with sandpaper and it works just fine. BUT - be sure to use the wet/dry type or you'll make a big sticky mess. Trust me.
yes you can that stone is a key stone in most of the honers tool boxs
For lapping the lapping stone I went to my local glass store and for 20 bucks he gave me a piece of 3/4 inch thick tempered glass. It is 12"X18". You can place a full piece of sand paper on it and have a perfectly flat surface.
The best part is that it was only 20 bucks and sand paper is pretty cheap.
