Thread: My Grey Coticule?

I received this coticule this week and have since honed two razors on it and got very nice results. I set the bevels on my nani 2k and then used the dilucot method using this coticule. The two razors that I have honed on it have smooth/comfortable edges, from my testing.

I am just slightly confused as with the multitude of coticule threads and pictures I have seen, I have not seen anyone using a coticule this color. I tried to capture it as best I could in the pics. This stone is basically grey, with a faint hint of green. More grey than green though.

Does anyone have any experience using a coticule this color. I know it is a very hard stone and probably a slow cutter, but I wanted to see if any experts could give me some more information on this stone and experiences using a colorless coticule.

That is typical of a La Verte strata coticule. Good luck with your learning curve. I would expect it to be slow.

I was wandering around coticule.be and the color of my stone looks very similar to two "La Grise" stones pictured on the site.

The photo leaves something to be desired but here is a vintage natural pink/gray coticule that I lucked into. The pink side is 100% smooth and creamy pink. The gray side is definitely gray but that side has hard inclusions here and there which, while they don't prohibit honing, they do limit using the full length of the stone.

I am at work now so can't post photos of the gray side. Tomorrow I'll try to get some up so that you can compare my stone to yours in terms of color. I know mine is a very hard stone (gray side) but I haven't done much honing with it to have any conclusion to present. Nice stone you have there and a rare one. Congrats.

Who knows? I'm no real expert on this strata (or layer or vein) identification, but I can't recall seeing a La Grise with the big manganese inclusions like your stone has. La Verte has them. Either way, it's a very attractive stone.

I remember one of the first things I can remember from this site was wondering how people could sit around and just look at the beauty of stones... Now I get it. That's really nice

Here is my pink/gray natural combo again. The last photo showing the side of the hone half wet and half dry. The gray side is extremely hard and slow. You can see the inclusions in the pitted area. They don't appear to negatively effect the edge. There is pink interspersed within the gray on that side but the gray is dominant by far. I have to use this side more to draw a conclusion on effectiveness. The pink side is phenomenal.

I have owned a La Grise / La Verte Coticule as well!
As far as I remember these two veins are hard to seperate and appear cloese by and have similar properties (overall).

Mine was very hard and gave me nice shaves!
Now I use a much bigger La petite blanche with similar results

Try your coticule and see if you like it, it may be very good!

Jimmy, my man! That's just like my La Petite Blanche. It's rare-ish, it seems.

I call it eggplant colored, and that side is incredible. Fast action and really really nice edges. The other side of mine is a very good quality BBW as well.

The layer is very thin, and mine is uneven, so I haven't lapped it. I just use it uneven. I would love to play with one that is flat and ready to go.

Im about to buy a coti/bbw combo stone. If I will have the oppurtunity to choose from a lot, is there something I should look for? Are there some colors, veins, stripes, marks or something else that is a sign of better usability for a razor? Or it doesn't matter, and I will only know after I have purchased and used it?
