Are you sure that's the top? I know that's a stupid question but I can't imagine why someone would lacquer the honing surface.
yes its the top i think the person that i bought it from set another stone that wasnt dry on top of this stone the bottom is completely lacquered
See if you can lap off with a DMT 325. I know some of the guys use the 8C I think it is even coasrer. Wet dry sand papers etc.

Sorry, I forgot to answer the actual question. I disagree with Modine simply because of what DMT says, which is that the 325 is only acceptable for lapping water hones. DMT recommends only the XX plate for lapping other hones.
That doesn't mean you cannot get away with it, but the manufacturer does not recommend it. You've been warned.
325 will work fine.
I personally use XXC, then C , then 1.2k Atoma.
you can achieve the same effect with a sandpaper grit progression, and a flat surface to back it.

ok went with 325 wet & dry sand paper then 800 grit then 2000 grit the stone cleaned up beautifully its green with some very small yellow dots some yellow streaks and some black marks and it has a red hue to the left hand side of the stone
