    I never said it was a four dimensional hone. Two coticule layers sandwiching a "hybrid" layer.

    Your description made me think of a hone with three simultaneously usable honing layers...

    I was just writing about the layers. I probably should have been more specific on how the layers were oriented. I am going to have to work somewhat on the thin side in order to see the hybrid layer in the future. I am hoping it will be worth the wait.

    How does one find these better looking stones? Is that where the "Select" vs "Standard" kicks in??

    Well I have had one from this vein for quite awhile I think but didn't realize what it was. I had posted in the past about my pink/gray vintage coticule that I bought from a rock collector. The pink side will set bevels with slurry, turning the soup black in short order.

    The gray side is hard as, well a rock, and has varied colors and some occlusions. I've played around with it some but not enough to know if it is viable for honing. It is awfully hard. The photos show the beautiful thing and the first three are dry and the last is wet.

    Either, you have to find a vendor that is nice enough to send you some pictures (I think ,thesuperiorshave has photos), or you have to ask ardennes coticule directly for certain layers. Since you´ll have that stone for quite a while (a lifetime, in most cases), I think it is worth looking and asking for "the one".
    The standard/selected thing is mostly a question of whether the stone has cracks or how clean the glue lines are and stuff, AFAIK. Has not much to do with the general appearance and absolutely nothing with performance.

    @gary haywood: Is the price due to the fact that it´s a Burton series or is it the new price scheme from ardennes coticule?

    @gunner777:
    As for the layer question, I totally go with gary haywood.
    About la Dressante: AFAIK, This is a thick layer with pretty different appearance and performance from hone to hone. If you look through the vault, you find a lot of very different looking la Dressantes.

    Regards,
    tok

    my les lat was 200x60 which to be fair with a box all in at i'm sure it was 220 euros. i think that was not a bad price . i got two good coticules for that, two good layers the yellow is as fast as lightening i would say its faster than my 1k naniwa or not much in it. it aslo leaves a a mork brisk edge while the hybrid side leaves a seriously mellow edge that does feel so kind on my face . both sides qualify as nice coticules so i love it and like i say this will be with me as long as i live.
