Maybe. You have to try it and see. Rock either works well as a hone or it doesn't. Do you have a photo or a more detailed description for what you're referring to ?
No pics just shopping for a new rock. I find the bbw on my vintage combo to be pretty useless so was looking at les latnueses for the hybrid side. Not easy to find one as you can imagine. But there is a la veinette with a hybrid side available. just figured I would ask if this layer with hybrid has been tested before I pull the trigger. This stone she is not cheap!
added coticule pic but not of hybrid side
I'm just speaking from personal experience for what it's worth...but have you checked out the dilucote method? I have a vintage coticule and have honed my razors from bevel to finish on the one stone with great results. I also have a Norton 4/8k and a 1k and with some razors including one I just honed for someone else found just as good of results with that one stone as with 4. Maybe look more at the actual coti side. Thats just my 2 bits FWIW :)
My hone results off the coticule side is not an issue. still learning but have had descent shaves from it. Problem is there is only 1-2 mm left of it:(
Some say this still can last years (Only hone for myself). I am not a believer and would sleep better knowing that there is a fresh thick hunk of coticule available to put a buttery smooth edge on that next ebay/antique store find.
Thanks,
Peter B.
Wow hadnt heard of hybrid La Veinette before(are you sure about the id)
In a hybrid layer there is a cerain chanse of bad inclusions, if it dont suffer from that chanses are good...
There were some hybrid coticules available at SuperiorShave.com, but his stock seems to sell out pretty fast. I don't know if he had exactly what you're looking for, but you can check it out if you want.
Being a excessive reader of coticule.be, this is still the first time, that I hear of any other layer than les latneuses, that has a hybrid side. Doesnīt have to mean anything but I donīt see, why the bout on the picture shouldnīt be a les latneuses.
In short: I doubt that itīs a la veinette, but Iīm no expert. What I donīt doubt is that this hone will work great on at least one side, maybe both – wait, this hone has actually six sides :hmmm:

Tok
BBW never been used as a sharpening purposes until recently People find out it can be used.
Now if you figure out bbw is useless then next one will be same to you.
To me it is useless too but so many people loves it and enjoy using it.
Some people even shave off from bbw.
hope this helps.
no1slacker, what makes you think this hone is from the La Veinette vein? From what I have read, La Veinette Coticules usually are natural combination stones with a BBW side. Could you post a picture of your "hybrid" side?
Hybrids do work very well they are called les latneusess. One side is creamy as usaul and the other resembles multi colours. the la vainette is a bbw/coti combo. I never hardly use the bbw side . i use hybrid side regular. I like the la vainette yellow side it very nice coticule. may be be better for you and just learn to use the yellow side.
I contacted Ardenes looking for a Les Latnuesess and Maurice offered this stone and said it was La Veinette with a hybrid side but only sent a pic of the coticule side. After much thought I bought it anyway. Figured if the hybrid side is not usable at least La Veinette is. I will let ya know in 3 to 4 weeks when it is received.
AFAIK, any layer can be a combo (hybrid). I have a La Veinette that is backed w BBW.
From the picture early in this thread it looks like a natural hybrid combo. I do not want or need bbw. just hope hybrid turns out to be serviceable.
And why exactly is that?
Sham, since you've brought that up, you might want to read this thoroughly. But let's not discuss it more in this thread, that's quite an off-topic.Quote:

Les Latneuses, itself, is a three layer vein. It comprises of two coticule layers that sandwich a "hybrid" layer. The "hybrid" layer was named so because it was believed to be a mixture of yellow coticule and Belgian Blue Whetstone. It is now believed to be something different. The two yellow coticule layers of this vein have slightly different characteristics according to those in the know. The yellow coticule layer most identified with this vein is considered very fast as far as coticules go. That layer is said to give a "brisk" edge. The other yellow coticule layer of this vein is fast, but noticeably slower than the other yellow coticule layer. The edge from this layer of the vein is said to be "mellow." To confuse things even more, some Les Latneuses coticules are glued to slate without the hybrid side intact. I wonder if a La Veinette vein naturally met up with a Les Latneuses vein somehow.
If you do actually receive a La Veinette, you will be getting a popular vein of coticule. That said, all veins of coticules are said to provide excellent edges. The differences are mostly for the connoisseurs. Maurice is also very good a picking out hones that straight razor sharpeners will like, so you are in good hands. I, still, have only read of La Veinette cotiucles being natural coticule/BBW stones, though. I might ask the guys on Coticule.be about this; however, there are very knowledgeable people here that will be able to help.
For honing on the hybrid side, you will want to talk to Gary. He really was the pioneer for honing on the hybrid side of the Les Latneuses vein of coticule.
I hope you enjoy your stone.
A "hybrid" layer does not refer to a natural combination Coticule/BBW hone. A hybrid layer is different. To my knowledge, only the Les Latneuses vein produces natural combination stones that are Coticule/Hybrid hones.
Here is a thread that shows pictures of a Les Latneuses stone:
Vault n°51 - home of the famous Belgian Coticule Whetstone
Thanks for all the info about the Les Latneuses hybrids. I was trying to get one but they are a hot item. Maurice is awesome! Tho he never sent a picture of the hybrid side as requested. First I heard of a hybrid from any other layers than Les Latneuses. guess I will be the lab rat on this one.
Man this is going to be a long wait. thanks again Altshave.
