That's a novaculite stone called a Charnley Forest, from Leicestershire in the Midlands of the United Kingdom. The mines are closed down and have been for a long time, so technically its an extinct species. They are extremely hard and should only ever need lapping once. Sometimes they have pinny inclusions.
'Grit' equivalent can be as coarse as 8-10k to as fine as 16K+, some claim 20K.
A very pretty one. Does look like a Charnley to me too.
It is Charnley Forest.
have fun.
How much they cost? They are comparable with coticule?
Livio
They don't cost anything as they no longer exist. :) They cost what you paid for it :) And we DO NOT offer valuations, sorry, but rules are rules.
They are only comparable with a coticule to the extent that they may be used to finish a razor.
Otherwise, no. They are generally finer, and alot harder. Coticules are garnet based, Charnleys are novaculite, metamorphic rock.
Some Coticules may be used with a slurry to bevel set or certainly 3K+ range and hone a dull razor to shave ready without using any other stone, using water dilutions. Charnleys are very slow polishers and can only polish, not bevel set or sharpen in the context of honing. They are for final finishing only.
So in summary, it could complement a coticule
By showing the stone here the value just went up.
Btw Livio, asking the seller for a BIN price is frowned upon.
what an error you have made
as piet said, the value has just gone up and those of us who might have been watching that are now going to be angry
and those that werent, will now be keeping an eye on it:soapbox:
bit of advice, if you spot something like this on ebay, keep it to yourself and dont say anything!
how hard is this concept to understand!?
Ya lucky bum! LOL:popcorn:
Ooops,I thought you won it!
Very prety CF. It would be quite interesting to test it specificaly the inclusion in the middle. Normaly they are no probs but this one looks too much different from what I have seen so far.
I am sorry I create such an upset crowd of people on this forum. I really don't know what kind of stone is, so I ask before i decide to buy something. As for buy it now , is part of this Ebay game, and the price I offered plus the shipping to USA is not a cheap one. So , Piet in the future please don't try to give lesson on the Ebay matter, I really appreciate if you keep it for yourself.
As for the price going up, what is the matter, if you really like it or need it
bid 500$ and have it.
I try it to keep the posting here just at a tech level. Some of you guys been so helpfull, just please keep the answers to the object.
Regards
Livio
Livio, I think you not only need some Ebay lessons but also some about etiquette. This is a public forum and I'm just trying to be helpful.
Nothing at all. Because we are talking about things that are relatively scarce and no longer in production of any kind, the value is entirely subjective. (one of the reasons the forum so strongly bans price estimates)
Whether it goes for $5 or $5000 doesn't make any difference as long as the buyer and seller are both satisfied.
As far as etiquette, let's all just breathe and try to remember that the freedom to talk about anything we want (as long as it's on-topic) cuts both ways. livio has every right in the world to post question that might bring attention to auctions as long as they're honest questions, even if it makes somebody else have a harder time bidding.
Likewise, Piet has every right in the world to be annoyed by it, and even to share his annoyance as long as things don't turn nasty.
Another good tip on etiquette is that 'tone' is often lost in text. Taking the worst possible interpretation of what someone posts leads to ad-hitlerum posts.
That's a cool stone. Whoever gets it. Good luck guys.
MIke:)
thanks livio for posting this lovely stone i was looking to acquire an escher but this charnleyforest will do and to the rest dont get caught in my crosshair:gwh:lol
Nice stone.
From what I hear if you use it with oil and make a lot of laps it rewards you the most.
Have fun with it, it's very nice.
livio, seriously, youre now running about ebay asking public questions asking every tom dick and harry with a sharpening stone is it good for razor sharpening!
youre going to ruin every auction at this rate, cool your jets and just let the auctions run without all that nonsense, youre breaking ebay rules too with all your buy it now capers!
really beginning to be annoying
