i am looking at starting to hone my own razors. so i am wondering after the razor is honed what do you do with the stones, rinse them good to clear grit and metal and let them dry or what do i do?

I just rinse them and wipe them dry with whatever is handy. I find that my shaptons need to be lapped every 3rd or 4th razor for best results. That's really about it.
I rinse/rub them down, dry them, and wrap them in a clean piece of cloth.
I rinse mine under running water and rub them with just my hand. Then I just place them out to dry naturally and then put them away.

Water stones are rinsed with a strong spray from the kitchen sink, left to dry and then just put away. Since they get rinsed also before each use, I do not store them in cloth. I do store my Norton 1K in water in a plastic container I picked up at Walmart. I add a few drops of bleach to the water in this container to prevent any nasty things from happening.
Oil stones are wiped with a soft cotton cloth, usually an old tee shirt and put away in a plastic or wooden box, since I do not want these to get dust or dirt on them.
Stones with slurry on them can be left to dry without rinsing the slurry off.

Agreed. If you see the gray metal on waterstones, Arkansas type stones or DMT's or the shiny gray metal on other hones like barber hones or Spyderco hones then that should be cleaned off before the next use. Try to store them so that dust, dirt etc do not land on them. Always rinse off the hone before each use.Quote:

Another tip that I picked up from a j-nat website is to avoid touching the honing surface with your fingers. The same oils we lube our strops with when we palm rub them will be absorbed by the stone. I handle them by the edges.
Depends on the stone I am using;
If I am using Naniwas or Nortons I rinse the stone when I am done and dry them off with a towel. If I am using a coticule with slurry I like to save the slurry on the stone for next time.
If I am using my Y/g Escher (always with slurry), I then keep the slurry on the stone for next time too because I am not wasting that gold.
