I have stopped taping the spines with black electrical tape, in favour of "Transpore" medical tape by 3M. It's exactly 1/2"wide with a much nicer gum that doesn't stay half stuck on the steel when you pull the tape off. Good stuff worth noting.

I use the clear hockey tape that I buy from sportscheck or any other sports store.
Works for me and doesn't wear out as I'm honing.
But I'll give the tape a try and see how it works!
I quit taping the spine and found that my net wealth increased, I became healthier, happier and women began to find me irresistible. YMMV
I’ve only taped the spine for razors with ornate spine work, and when I followed the Unicot method. Since I now use just the Dilucot method, I again only tape those with the fancy spine work. I figure the thickness of one piece of tape with not have that much impact on the initial bevel set from the forging.
I do have some of that medical tape in my first aid kit, I’ll have to try it to compare against electrical tape. It sounds like a good idea to get the reduced residual gum/glue.
