I Have this very old hone which has obviously been in this old wooden box all of it's life. It was grungy and black as I received it. I flattened it on a worn DMT and it cleaned up to be light brown in color. I tried to get good pics as best I could. Would any of you hone guys have an idea what it is? It was not dished out, so I think it might be a razor hone. It is super hard and fine. Thanks for the help!:)
By any chance it is not 8x2". If it is so I am sorry to say it does remind me India stone. I hope I am wrong.
It is 7x2 and almost an inch thick! The more I rub it on the dmt, the more uniform the color gets. This has to be the hardest stone I have tried to flatten. It is wearing out my worn out DMT!Quote:

It is a hard wood and assembled with nails and wire nails. No glue! This thing is Olllld, guys! I am hoping it is a natural stone. I am sending pics of it after I had worn myself out on it! Good point! It surely is symmetric and the bottom is smooth as well. It almost seems like a big barber's hone in that regard. It flattens like one too!:banghead:
That might be it! Perhaps I can use it as a barber's hone would be used.

I agree that it looks like a vintage India (I bought some by mistake) so it's probably an India or another vintage synthetic. I doubt it's a finisher but who knows, you just have to try it.
Fortunately I've been able to sell off the Indias I bought by mistake locally. The last one I didn't even bother to lap. I didn't want to lose money and time because of a mistake :)
So any new info on this stone? Is it a finisher or bevel setter?
I think thats what the sucker is, then. What is an India oilstone for? Looks like the one you pictured was made by Norton. I just bought it because it was 10 bucks and I took a chance it was good for something! ThanksQuote:

Wow! i don't know about this one being in the 4000 range. It seems a WHOLE lot finer that that! If a hard Arkansas is truly hard and an India is 4000 and will slurry up then the quandary continues! I suppose it is a "mystery hone" and cannot wait to substitute it for my 12k finisher to see what happens! I will report soon, but my shave den is under remodel at present, so I will be grabbing wedges for a few days! Thanks, guys! I appreciate the feedback and interest as well!:)
I have an old Norton combo Oil Stone, 11 1/2 x 2 1/2, not sure what it is, exactly, I'd guess India. One side is coarse, and looks like the OP's. The other is smooth...
I have a Coticule 8x3, that looks just like that stone.....
I've been following along with interest b'cuz I've got a hone which I know nothing about and thought I might pick up a pointer or two along the way. ONe thing that popped up a couple of times was people mentioning that they hoped it wasn't an India stone. Should they be avoided? Will they hurt razors? Just personal preference?
Hope the OP's stone works out for him -- sounds like he's putting a lot of work into it.
thats an indian stone i too have bought a few old stone's off of ebay and cleand them up and found them to be and indian stone the orange dot's give it away they are good for bevel setting thats what i use mine for
When you buy a mistery hone and it turns to bu the India usually you could buy a new one cheaper than you paid for it as mistery hone.Quote:

lol that indain is around 25-35 micron or about 340 grit man you will have some weepers
OH? I think is is truly an oil stone as when I put water on it the water ran into the next room! HA! However, aint no way this stone is that coarse! No sound is emitted as the razor is pulled across it. My 12000 sounds like a truck in comparison! Maybe it is so smooth because I flattened it with a worn DMT? I have flattened lots of barber's hones, but this thing is much harder! I discovered a few small divots in the center, so I quit for now until I get time to rub on it some more. I have found a cure for my fledgling HAD! Be happy with the nice, modern synthetics I have and when I get weak, I can rub on this thing! Anyway, for 10 bucks it looks cool and old with my collection of barberaphelia! All mystery hones are hereby up for grabs!:roflmaoQuote:
