What's this, hone apartheid - segregation isn't de rigeur anymore, don't you know? Don't you agree all hones are created equal?
On a more serious note: what the hones in that picture have in common is that they, or their type, have been classified - rightly and wrongly - as CF by SRP members.

I don't; it's messy (but thin sewing oil works best, as Olivia told us as one of the first).

Oil is great on a cf, you just have to find the right oil for your stone. I started with 3n1, but tried sewing machine oil (by a recommendation from Lynn) and then Kroil. The results from the sewing machine oil and Kroil are stellar! Summary is that the sewing machine oil and Kroil is just thinner.

i'm looking at the norton honing oil. wondering how thin it is.. anyone tried it?

It looks like, but was bought in France, very small size.

It could fit in my travel case anyway. :)

Lap it. Take some pics of the slurry. Is it one of the hardest stones you have ever lapped? If it is very hard & seems to take forever, lap it to a fine grit of say 1K...you could have a CF

Clean and lap it first. Also if it is coming from France there is possibility that it could be one of their hones.

I lap(ed ?) it yesterday, the slurry seems quite white to me, i'll post pictures.

I already did it before the moment I took the pictures, and the stone was still grey-green.

Seems also quite hard to me.

I'ld say it's at least as fine as my coticule. Perhaps more.

I first thinked about a coticule, because we may find quite a lot of them in France, but the color bugs me. We may also find slates like the "La Lune" one, but I've never heard of a french hone with this color :thinking:
