There are many stones that are gray but are not Thuringian.

@ OP are those purple(?) features figuring in the stone?

I was going by the shiny top, gray color and whitish streaks on the side. It also looks to be soft by the scratches visible. And the apparent size. Maybe I'm wrong.

    Default Brown Thuringian.

    Looks like brown Thuringian.

I have one like this and ask the same question on this forum. These are great hones but small ones.

    Here is mine.

Lol, it looks a bit too similar like yours doesn't it

I don't see the resemblance with a so called brown Thuringian. I question if it's even a Thuringian, there are other soft stones out there. A wet close-up would help.

This is what I believe is a Brown Thuringian. Although the base colour on mine differs, it has those similar orange/pink markings. An authority on hones has used mine and believes it to be a Thuringian.

This one is dark brown and makes yellow slurry.

It doesn't look like my Thuringians with brown patches, nor like my Vosgiennes (Vosgienne is in my opinion a correcter name for 'Brown Thuringians'). They are a very uniform purplish brown (see also here and here).

Maybe so, but you're going to have a hard time getting us Americans to say Vosgiennes!
