does anyone have some informations about this stone, with a sticker on one side "special stone only for good razors" "F.G B.C" "real genuine quality" ;
here this is a picture i found about this stone, i got the exactly the same.

Its what sham calls "the brown escher" even though its not an escher.
Either way I want one lol.

The name of the stone is Pierres a (RASOIR--for razor) La Lune. The face on the label is the moon hence the french name for it. You normally don't see them in their wooden box but the box has the moon on top of the lid, much bigger, and says the name of the brand on the box. The box also says you can use oil or water and I've heard oil works better.

I told a fellow Dutchman about these stones who was planning European trips in search of whetstones and old mines. When he looked through his collection he found one he simply bought at a supermarket in France on a previous trip. So it's possible a ton of French have a Moonstone in their kitchen drawer :DQuote:

Sham, A.K.A. hi_bud_gl, told me that he has seen and used them in gray and in brown IIRC. Both suitable for finishing an already sharp razor. Sort of in the same vein ... no pun intended ... as an Escher.Quote:

La Lune/the moon pictogram/FGBC are trademarks rather than a hone variety. Likewise, the designation 'Special Stone' was used on at least two distinct hone types. The one in that last link does not seem the same as the one in the OP.
I used Sham's Special Stone for about a month or so to learn another stone. It does not work with slurry like thuringian/Escher as it's a much harder stone and will destroy the edge. Works ok on water, but comes alive with a light oil like sewing machine oil. With higher hardness steel razors, this stone can leave a super sharp edge...too sharp for a newer person to straight shaving as you MUST use very light stroke. The sharpness of the edge reminded me of a 30K edge, but in a natural...which is much less apt to overhone as natural stone finishers will agree. 20-30 light x strokes after a progression to 16k will leave a spooky edge with this stone. It is one that I would love to own myself, but I had to send it back home.
Thank you for clarifying Artan, we have still not determined what FGBC stands for. I have since come across a few more of these “Special Stones” most are un-marked other than an ink stamp on the side indicating “Very Fine” or for the big one pictured below “Extra Fine”.Quote:

La Lune is not an Escher, I am confused?
As far as I have been able to ascertain, the hones were distributed by a french company called Manufrance (note: distributed by them, not made by them). Manufrance, from St Etienne, was formed in 1887/8 and originally manufactured firearms. The name, originally "Manufacture d' Armes de Saint Etienne" (some quote it as "Manufacture Francaise d'Armes et Cycles de St.Etienne") was shortened in 1911. That would mean that the hones with the Manufrance label on them were post 1911.
They were France's first mail order company, with a huge range of goods: cycles, guns, axes, tents, clothes, razors, etc. A lot of the lines were made by third parties. Their label is often seen on the Pierres La Lune (means just 'moonstone') Special Stone. I have seen a few of Manufrance's catalogues on the net but although a good range of straight razors are depicted (mostly of the St Etienne brand, so probably made by or expressly for Manufrance) I can't find one with the moonstone in it. If one of those cataloques could be found (there seem to be quite a few about) with the Pierres La Lune pictured that might shed some more light on the makers of the stone. Manufrance was bought out (or taken over) in 1988, or so I have read.

The Special Stone is definitely not a thuringian/Escher. What it is...I'm not sure. From what I am getting from this, the La Lune and Special Stone are pretty much the same.Quote:
