Personally, I live for these threads, for they are the ones that really get me excited. Notwithstanding that I should probably get out more often, does anyone have a recommendation as to what this hone could be? Google searching brings up nothing other than the company were based in Portsmouth in South England.

Sharpman, I very much doubt its a Charnley - The size is wrong, The colour is wrong and although some Charnleys work great for razors, they were never originally sold as razor hones, neither were they sold labelled or in packaging.Quote:

well after looking at the hones that i know of that stone looks like a liyn melynllyn a yellow lake stone it ruffly around 8k the reason i think its a yellow lake stone is from the purple-ish tint on the stone looking at the box to the bottom right hand corner it looks to say great britain
I hope it's what you were looking for...with the size I'm thinking synthetic like a carborundum. Not that it's bad as I've had some good ones. That's the part about the bay...never know until it arrives. I got in this : Nice off white razor hone sharpening stone 8'' Natural? - eBay (item 200622253232 end time Jun-27-11 09:09:05 PDT) one only to find out it's just like a Norton oil stone...not suitable for razors. I was thinking it was a natural by the pic...but you win some and loose some.
I had it in my watch list but figured it was likely to be a slate similar to a Yellow Lake. Although it being a "razor hone" it could be a finer slate.
Should be interesting to see what it is and how it performs.

I'm pretty sure it is a Yellow Lake. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow. It is a natural, closely resembling a BBW, but harder and with a few very faint lines going through it. It leaves an edge less polished than an Escher and cuts about as quickly. I just had a shave off it and it was very comfortable. I have read these are in the 8-10K region, but I've long stopped caring about 'K.' Personally I don't care for 'K.' It doesn't exist in naturals and never will. There is coarse, medium and fine. I have also seen some hones marked 'very fine.' This is a finishing hone and I would say it is fine. Being British and marked for 'razors,' I wouldn't be surprised if this was the type of hone used used on Sheffield steel.
I don't believe that a relationship indefinitely exists between the quality of a shave and fineness of an edge left by a natural hone that succeeds an 8K artificial, there being no indefinite relationship between fineness and comfort, the latter which may supersede fineness. Charnleys I have had have left a higher polish than Thuringians, but not as nice as shave (for me). This hone does not leave as high a polish as a Thuringian, but off one razor has provided as nice a shave. I look forward to testing it on others.
