I have a little box that has been carved out of it but that's all I know about the stuff.
I used to do quite a bit of soapstone carving several years ago. I'd think that it would be way too soft to use as a hone. It would make a great brush handle though.
You can use these to make slurry on other hones. I have a dark blue Chinese hone, that came with a soapstone rubber, works pretty well. The stone came with a label from one of the 19th century International Exhibitions, but I don't know anything else about it's origins unfortunately.
