Thanked: 443Got a Naniwa 12k
A thread a couple of weeks ago convinced me to add an N12k to my box-o-rocks, and WOW is the word. It's so fast. It's so fine. It's so smooth. Today I shaved off one of its edges and went right out into the 98 degree afternoon sun and didn't have any irritation.
I'm looking forward to new discoveries about my fine coti and Thuringian now, too, with a better bridge between them and the Norton 8k."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

Thanked: 993Glad you're liking it. I think it's a great stone. I too use it after the Norton's and before the PHIG or Escher. I find that 10 strokes most of the time is about right.

The Naniwa 12k is a good stone. You may find you like that Thuringian better once you get some nice edges off it. My Escher has been my go to finisher for a while now. Hard to beat the edges.

Mr. T. You're gonna be a happy guy for some time to come. I have about 90 days w/ mine & it makes for some wonderful edges by itself or before finisher of choice. You'll thank yourself you got it. I had to be pushed to get it, but boy, am I glad I did. 'Much obliged to 'Cudarunner for the push.

Thanked: 443Hi Mr. R. You're right; the edges right off it are really nice.
10 or 20 laps coming off a good job on the Norton 8k are all it needs, in my experience so far. Haven't tried it yet on the Case Red Imp; I suspect that's the hardest blade I've got--or maybe the Genco Head Barber. Does anyone have an opinion about how it behaves with Sheffield steel? That's another combo I haven't tried.
The speed really is startling. It's a real relief after trying to get post-8-k fine edges off my other finishers. That is a much more manageable (and enjoyable) project now.
I can't yet say anything about stainless, either, since my stainless Dovo seems to have a warped blade or a frown. I can say I get a really nice polish, I guess, but only on one side of the bevel so I can't honestly say how it shaves.
My own Thuri, when used with slurry, seems a little coarser than the N12k. Without slurry, though, I think I'm getting refinement beyond 12k. Still no news from my slow coticule; haven't reached that stage of the testing yet.
Thanks all for sharing info and enthusiasm."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

Thanked: 13249Your probably going to find the the Naniwa's are about the most razor friendly hones out there, I have said it a few times if I had to choose only one set (heaven forbid) it would be those.. Mostly because easy razors can can honed on just about anything, but those few finicky, problem, chippy, or harsh razors I seem to have found that the Naniwas are the set that solves those problems.

I know! I have REALLY wanted to get a Naniwa 12k since I started straight razor shaving.
Maybe I will get myself one for Christmas.
